Allard has made a remarkable and notable transformation from an accomplished high school pitcher last spring with a promising college future to a potential top 10 draft pick this June.

Last spring Allard pitched in the 86-90 mph range and was a high level performer for San Clemente High School, going 6-2, 1.32 with a pair of saves while striking 98 hitters in 63 innings. He only issued 17 walks and had a verbal commitment to UCLA.

Listed generously at 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, Allard has a young look and body and doesn't look like the type of athlete who will ever bulk up much. But between the end of the high school season and the Perfect Game National Showcase in mid-June, Allard gained some hidden strength and his stuff took an impressive step forward. He topped out at 93 mph at that event with a very tight and sharp breaking 77 mph curveball and continued to improve throughout the summer until he was pitching consistently in the 92-94 mph range with one of the best breaking balls in the 2015 class. Allard also exhibited the same type of command and pitchability as when he was pitching in the mid- to upper-80s.

Southpaws aren't as impacted by relative size as high school prospects as righthanded pitchers, although scouts are sure to make sure that he shows good durability and maintains his stuff through pitch counts this spring. If he does sign professionally this summer, he'll likely be one of fastest high school picks this season to reach the upper minor leagues or big leagues.
