Freshman/Sophomore Stat Pack
During the course of the season our friends at CollegeSplits.com are going to be providing statistical leaders in the freshmen and sophomore classes in five different offensive categories and four different pitching categories. Each week we will choose one of those categories to share in the weekly PG college baseball national notebook, with stolen bases and saves being listed this week.

Louisiana 4, Texas-Arlington 1 (Sunday)
With the Nos. 1 and 2 teams facing one another in Baton Rouge Thursday through Saturday, Sunday was a freed up day and afforded me the opportunity to grab my first look at Louisiana's shortstop Blake Trahan. Recently ranked as the 54th best prospect in the Perfect Game Top 100, Trahan has more than done his part to capture the attention of scouts, hitting .374 over the first 43 games.
More impressive is during that stretch there have been just six games in which Trahan was held hitless and Sunday was one of them (though if not for a hit and run he would’ve had a single up the middle). Even higher than his batting average is his .490 on-base percentage, collecting more than twice the amount of walks (30) to strikeouts (11), and he has been hit by 11 pitches.
He may not have filled up the box score on Sunday but he didn’t have to in order to make an impression as he played his traditional stellar defense and showed off his advanced two-strike approach at the plate. The numbers reflect the fact that Trahan won’t expand the strike zone very often but will show an aggressive, put-the-ball-in-play approach at the plate early in the count but only on pitches he could handle. With that contact-first approach, Trahan shows comfort to hit to all fields and won’t change his swing in order to sell out for power, even in batting practice.
