Bregman, Rodgers go 2-3 in draft

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies selected 2011 and 2014 Perfect Game All-American shortstops Alex Bregman and Brendan Rodgers second and third overall during the 2015 MLB Draft on Monday night. Bregman and Rodgers were two of 17 former PG All-Americans taken in the first round, and two of the 23 taken on the first day (rounds 1-2), of the annual draft.

Rodgers was one of 19 All-Americans taken on Monday that participated in last year's event, the 12th edition of the Classic.

There have now been 165 PG All-Americans taken in the first round of the draft since the event's inception in 2003. Six of those players – Matt Bush, Justin Upton, Tim Beckham, Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Correa and Brady Aiken – have gone with the first overall pick.

Thirty-seven of the 42 (88 percent) players taken in the first round had previously attended a Perfect Game event, 21 of which attended the PG National Showcase. Of all of the picks made on the first day, 64 of 75 (85 percent) had played in a PG event with 35 of those attending a National Showcase.

Carlos Correa was promoted by the Houston Astros on Sunday night making him the 104th former All-American to be called up to the big leagues and the fourth from the 2011 edition of the Classic, joining Addison Russell (Cubs), Joey Gallo (Rangers) and teammate Lance McCullers.

This year's Classic will be played once again at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, on Sunday, August 16 and will be televised on MLB Network. The Selection Show will occur on Monday, July 13 from the Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities in Cincinnati and will be televised live online at MLB.com.
