The
winners of each game and the losers of each game will face each other
on Tuesday, June 16.
Vanderbilt
4, Illinois 2
It
almost seemed as though Sunday's postponement due to weather took the
wind out of the sails of Tyler Jay and the Illini. Jay's stuff was
plenty electric, but he wasn't fooling the Commodores hitters as had
he done to all of his other opponents the rest of the year. Jay took
the loss giving up four runs on 10 hits through 6 1/3 innings.
On
the flip side, Dansby Swanson had a huge day, capped by being taken
first overall in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Swanson went 2-for-4 with a double (his 24th) and home run
(his 16th) off of Jay, helping to propel Vanderbilt's
offense. Zander Wiel and Rhett Wiseman also went 2-for-4, with Wiel
hitting his 15th home run, another solo shot off of Jay
that came in the bottom of the second inning.
Lefthander
Philip Pfeifer countered Jay with 6 2/3 solid innings of his own,
minimizing the damage by scattering seven hits and three walks while
giving up both of Illinois' runs.
Cal
State Fullerton 4, Louisville 3
After
usual Titans closer Tyler Peitzmeier worked five inning of relief in
Fullerton's 4-3 win in 11 innings over Louisville, Friday ace Thomas
Eshelman was called upon to close out the game. What made the
scenario so interesting is that he did just that, sending he and his
team to Omaha, at almost the exact same point in time as the Houston
Astros made him their second-round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft.
All
three pitchers for Fullerton pitched well, with Connor Seabold going
the first five followed by Peitzmeier's five innings and Eshelman's
one, and none of the three issued a free pass.
Designated
hitter Davi Olmedo-Barrera, who is enjoying a very good postseason
for the Titans, was the offensive hero, hitting a pair of solo home
runs in a 3-for-4 day, hitting his first in the top of the first and
his second in the 11th that proved to be the game winner.
Third baseman Jerrod Bravo's two-run single in the top of the eighth
inning pulled the Titans within even at 3-3 and forced extra innings.
The
loss ends an incredible season for the Cardinals, and it also spoiled
a great start by lefthander Josh Rogers, who allowed just three hits
a walk and one run, with six strikeouts, in seven innings.
TCU
5, Texas A&M 4
TCU
won a wild game in walkoff fashion over Texas A&M in 16 innings
to punch the eighth and final ticket to Omaha for the second year in
a row. Garrett Crain, who opened the bottom of the 16th with a walk, scored on a throwing error by Texas A&M third
baseman Ronnie Gideon on a hot shot off the bat of freshman catcher
Evan Skoug.
The
Horned Frogs looked in control much earlier in the game as starter
Alex Young cruised through 6 2/3 innings of six-hit, one-run ball in
which he struck out 10 Aggies. Riley Ferrell couldn't close things
out in the ninth as A&M scored a pair of runs on RBI groundouts
that forced extra innings.
Mitchell
Traver provided four no-hit, shutout innings in relief, striking out
six hitters along the way. Ryan Hendrix devliered 4 2/3 relief
innings, as both pitchers displayed electric stuff, although Hendrix
did walk seven batters.
