13u Championship Recap: Day 2

Jordan Posway
The action heated up in day two of the PG Super25 13u National Championship on Father’s Day. Day two featured an exciting slate of games and many proud fathers in attendance. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s action:

Hunter Conner and Team Rawlings PBF dismantled the Legends Prospects for a convincing 16-4 win. Conner recorded five RBIs on two extra base hits, one of which being a three-run triple in the first inning which got Team Rawlings off to a hot start. Brody Szako, Cash McNicholas, and Zach Wall combined for seven more runs. Szako and McNicholas relieved starting pitcher Tyler Burnett to close out the game. The Legends Prospects would bounce back against the Diamond Jacks in their second game of the day. From the second inning on, it was all Prospects. Pitcher Lucas Garcia was nearly perfect, surrendering a single hit to the Diamond Jacks through six innings. However, his stellar performance wasn’t limited to just pitching. Garcia added two triples to his already impressive resume in the fourth and seventh innings as the Prospects made a statement 6-0.

Excellent pitching performances on both sides made for a great defensive battle, but Bradley Rowlinson and Roadrunner Baseball edged Team Florida 2020 3-2 in seven innings. Rowlinson held Team Florida hitless for nearly three innings, allowing no earned runs. Samuel Gordon of Team Florida 2020 came in as relief for Reece Marley after the first three innings, and was absolutely brilliant. He pitched three hitless innings of his own, but his team failed to muster up any runs after the first inning. A three run second inning by the Roadrunners turned out to be just enough to put away Team Florida.

Tri-State Arsenal overcame a one run deficit in the bottom of the sixth to steal an 8-7 victory from the grasp of Florida Stealth Red courtesy of Joseph Richardson’s two-run double. Both teams were potent offensively, exchanging the lead six times throughout the contest. Richardson and Michael Becker combined for six of the Arsenal’s eight runs. Starting pitcher Phil Antoniotti earned the win after surrendering only one run over three wonderful innings on the mound.

For the second consecutive day, a game has ended in an 8-8 draw. Neither the Dallas Mustangs-Sumbler nor the Central Jersey Warriors could create separation. The Mustangs jumped out to four run lead in the top of the first, due in large part to Aiden Mendolia’s three-run double. The Warriors responded emphatically in the bottom of the same inning with five runs. Two of those runs came from Anthony Corbin, who hit the first home run of the National Championship. Both teams had a shot to pull ahead in the seventh inning, but neither team could take advantage. Florida Burn Tampa would make sure the Warrior’s next contest didn’t end in a draw. Florida Burn saved their best for last with a massive ten-run outburst in the top of the fifth. Trey Hinchliffe gave up six runs in a rough three innings as the starting pitcher, but redeemed himself with four RBIs of his own to spark his team to an incredible 14-9 comeback win.

The Indiana Bulldogs would ride Dylan Matusak’s arm to a 6-1 victory against the Richmond Braves National.  Matusak struck out six while allowing a measly three hits in seven innings. Cooper Thacker spearheaded the offensive attack with a two-run double in the first inning. The Bulldogs never surrendered their lead. The Braves had another rough outing against the East Cobb Astros. The Astros piled up seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back in their 12-4 triumph. Brennan Milone and Bryce Thompson combined for seven of the Astro’s twelve runs.

The FBH Angels pulled off a late sixth inning comeback against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Zaylan Perry kept the Pelicans’ bats in check for nearly five innings which put the Angels in a good position for the bottom of the sixth. A fielder’s choice and two RBI singles by Tyler Jacobs and Tyler Dowdy sunk the Pelicans 4-3.

The Akadema Diamond Stars Titans stunned the Dallas Mustangs with an improbable seventh inning comeback. The Dallas Mustangs accumulated nine runs in the first three innings, while the Akadema Diamond Stars had only four runs until their valiant seventh inning effort. Seven players on Akadema’s squad had at least one RBI. The Mustangs got into some serious trouble with untimely walks, causing the bases to be loaded with the score tied at 10. The Mustang’s pitcher could not muster up a third strike, so Jonathan Todd reached base on balls which scored Kameron Evans and sealed Akadema’s shocking 11-10 win. Fortunes changed quickly for Akadema in their next game against 643 DP Cougars Sterling. They built a 2-1 lead through three innings, but the Parks Harber and Alex Espinel of the Cougars combined for three RBIs off of two doubles to take the lead back for good. Jonathan Douglas pitched a complete game for the Cougars, racking up six strike-outs with only two earned runs. Akadema would fall 7-2.

The SC Bulldogs wasted no time as they built a strong five run advantage in the top of the first. Gabriel Sibert was a force at the plate and on the mound, driving in two runs and pitching all six innings. Sibert sparked the offense with an RBI single in their big first inning, and he would continue to give opposing batters fits as the Bulldogs topped the Texas Express 8-3. Things went from bad to worse for the Express as they would face Georgia Team Combat, one of the hottest teams in the tournament. Team Combat managed to score seven runs in both the first and sixth innings. Harrison Aulds, Miles Bowens, Lukas Cook, and Ryder Willard tallied two RBIs apiece as Georgia Team Combat would derail the Texas Express 14-5.

Dynasty 13u finished strong with five runs in the final two innings of their matchup against Giants Baseball Club. Jordan Perez and Reid Ricard commanded the mound, allowing their offense to create separation. Errors proved costly for the Giants, adding three more runs to Dynasty’s total. Ricard, Masyn Winn, and Carter Amarantos combined for the other four runs as Dynasty would take down the Giants 7-3 in six innings. The Giants started their next game off on the wrong foot against the GoWags Lumberkings who lived up to their name by driving in all 13 runs within the first three innings. Matthew Warrington and Nate Blasick stopped the Giants’ offense in its tracks in a short four inning contest. Blasick led the GoWags with three RBIs courtesy of a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.

Team Select dropped ten runs on the SWFL Stars. Matthew Corpas had an enormous impact on the game as both the pitcher and an offensive playmaker. Corpas and Adrian Figueroa combined for seven great innings with seven strike-outs. Corpas and Isaiah Hood both drove in two runs apiece as Team Select exerted their will 10-2.
