9u Championship Recap: Day 2

Jordan Posway
“Hot” was the word of the day from day two of the PG Super25 9u National Championship in Marietta, Georgia. The sweltering 91 degree weather was only rivaled by the heated competition from the second day of pool play. Here’s a concise review of Wednesday’s events.

The MOAB Dragons and the Carolina Heelz matched each other hit-for-hit through six innings, but the Dragons would emerge victorious thanks to late game heroics by Michael Scott. The Heelz established a 4-0 advantage after an explosive fourth inning, but the Dragons gradually clawed their way back into contention. Scott led the way with three hits in as many at-bats, including the seventh inning walk-off single that would sink the Heelz 6-5. While the Dragons accounted for six hits in their first game, they could only muster up one in their ensuing matchup versus Sam Lee and the Banditos. Lee fanned two batters in five masterful innings of work. Seth Sloan and the Banditos tallied nine runs in the first three innings en route to a 12-2 thumping of the Dragons.

Offense reigned supreme as the Game On Wolfpack and the KBC 9u combined for 23 total runs in a high-scoring affair on Field 7. Derek Peoples and the Wolfpack rebounded from a six-run deficit in the top of the fourth, but their efforts were in vain as a costly infield error in the bottom of the inning surrendered the game-winning run. Harrison Simpson and Zachary Grigalis teamed up for four RBIs in the KBC’s 12-11 triumph.

Neither the North Wake Crush nor Full Potential Sports reigned superior after seven innings, resulting in a 4-4 draw. Full Potential Sports’ fourth inning errors squandered their previous 3-0 lead and the aided the Crush’s four-run resurgence.

The Titans-Orange thwarted the Oklahoma Mudcats’ fifth inning comeback bid to hold on for the 8-7 win. Cayden Sheffield and the Titans erupted for a five-run first inning which created separation early. Sheffield finished 3-3 from the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. The Mudcats were valiant in defeat, scoring four of their seven runs in the final two innings. The Titans escaped with a win against the Mudcats, but they didn’t fare as well in their following game against Full Potential Sports. Michael Khajeh paved the way with 3 RBIs as Full Potential blanked the Titans 6-0.

After their 8-7 loss to the Titans-Orange, the Oklahoma Mudcats sought redemption against the Cherokee Reds. The Mudcats opened the game with a bang courtesy of a six-run first inning. Derek Curiel and William Hamilton held down the fort from the mound as the Mudcats coasted to an 11-3 victory.

For a second consecutive game, the Elite Gamers-Garner dropped ten runs on their opponent. This time, the Game On Wolfpack were the unlucky recipients. The Gamers handily prevailed, due in large part to four RBIs by Evan Doss and Kelvin Hunter. Their 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Gamers concluded a rough day for the Wolfpack.

The Pro Players Canes had a tough task ahead of them as they would face the Georgia Yard Dogs and the Cherokee Reds in back-to-back games. The Canes came out swinging against the Yard Dogs with a four-run first inning. However, Antonio Anderson and the Yard Dogs showed why they are ranked the #6 team in the nation, responding with nine runs of their own. Anderson recorded two RBI triples as the Yard Dogs trumped the Canes 14-8.

After the loss, the Canes desperately needed a win against the Cherokee Reds. The Canes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but much like their previous game, they would run out of gas down the stretch. The Reds rallied back and broke the game wide open with a monstrous eleven-run sixth inning. Grant Hodges racked up three RBIs courtesy of three singles and a triple as the Cherokee Reds rolled to a convincing 14-3 victory.
