17u Championship Recap: Day 3

Jordan Posway
Twenty teams gathered in Fort Myers for the PG Super25 17u National Championship, but only eight teams remain after a pivotal day three. The surviving teams will begin bracket play tomorrow afternoon at 12:30. Here’s a brief summary of today’s pool play action:

The Cangelosi Blacksox outscored their opponents 24-0 on the final day of pool play. In their first game, they trounced CBA 17u Team DTB 12-0 thanks to a banner day by John Saffrahn. He pitched a complete game shutout and notched five strikeouts. Lucas Karz and Carson Bartels supplied the offense with four hits and six RBIs. The Blacksox recorded another 12-0 shutout victory over Team Wilson-Red. Alec Hartsell was nearly perfect in his three innings on the hill as he allowed one hit, walked none, and struck out five.

A second inning surge propelled Marucci Raley past the Orlando Assault 11-0 in five innings. Caleb Armstrong left his mark on the game with a grand slam, which provided four of Marucci’s eight second inning runs. Cameron Taylor allowed a meager two hits in a complete game shutout.

The Ohio Surge exploded for nine runs in the first three innings of their 14-2 whipping of the Saw Savages. Nicholas Rose sparked the offense with a two-run double in the first inning. Jake Watson lasted all four innings with two earned runs and six strikeouts.

The Surge continued to wreak havoc in their next game against one of the hottest teams of the tournament, the Austin Banditos-Salazar. The Surge rode an absurd ten-run second inning to an 11-8 shootout victory. Brent Todys recorded a game-high four RBIs courtesy of a second-inning grand slam.

The Pro Motions Patriots never trailed after a two-run second inning which featured back-to-back RBI singles by Declan Devens and Joe Giovinco. The Patriots prevailed 4-1 in a low-scoring affair versus FTB Sarasota. Christian Capuano starred in the Patriots following game versus Nokona Baseball. Capuano lasted all seven innings in the Patriots’ 3-0 win as the Patriots finished the day with a 2-0 record.

Noah Fairbairn and the East Cobb Braves clobbered the CAPS Stars 5-1 on Field 4. Fairbairn allowed one earned run and struck out five in seven innings of work. The Braves gained control after Rocky Brown’s lead-off bomb to right field in the top of the second.

Lights-out pitching by Peter Holland limited SBO Florida’s offense to just two hits as Marucci Lemoine walked away with a 4-1 win. Mason Tucker had a great day from plate as he went 2-3 with a double in the fourth inning and a single in the sixth.

Rodregas Jenkins added to his impressive tournament with a huge RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that would lift Lenny Webster’s Catch42 over the Ninth Inning Royals 3-2. His masterful performance from the plate accounted for two of Catch42’s three runs on the day.
