16u Championship Recap: Day 2

Jordan Posway
It was a great day to be a pitcher. From shutouts to complete game performances, pitchers propelled their teams to important victories on day two of the PG Super25 16u National Championship in Emerson, Georgia. Here is the rundown of the events from the second day of pool play:

The East Cobb Astros caught fire late in their contest versus Bottom of the Ninth Baseball with eight runs in the final two innings. Brady Netherton held the opposing offense scoreless and tallied six strikeouts over four innings. Joe Lancellotti’s two-run homer in the fourth inning was the highlight of the Astros’ dominant 8-0 win.

The Astros blanked the 59ers 8-0 as well. Cody Greenhill clamped down on the 59ers’ offense, allowing one hit and zero earned runs in four innings on the mound. Xzavion Curry drove home three runs on a pair of singles as the Astros improved to 2-0 in pool play.

The 59ers would drop their second game as well. Alex Kuster rendered the 59ers' offense useless as A. Green Baseball crushed the opposition 5-0 for their first win of the tournament. They would pick up a second in their ensuing match-up versus the CV Marlins 16u. Tanner Glass contributed three RBIs on two hits as A. Green Baseball sunk the Marlins 6-4.

The Scorpions North 2017 Prime faced a tough schedule on Friday as they had to take on the 643 DP Cougars Sterling and the Indians Baseball Club. The Scorpions came up just short in their 3-2 loss to the Cougars. Kennet Sorenson accounted for all three of the Cougars’ RBIs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning.

The Scorpions would not be denied twice. They walloped Indians Baseball Club 6-0 behind the arm of Matthew Boswell. The Scorpions’ ace fanned six batters in as many innings. Donovan Benoit led the offensive charge with a two-run bomb and a pair of singles on a 3-3 day from the dish.

The Indian Springs Stingers found their footing late in their 9-3 victory over PBA Demarini. The Stingers strung together a momentum-shifting five-run rally in the top of the fourth, highlighted by Will Shepherd’s two-RBI triple to right field.

The Braves could only muster up four hits in a 13-0 defeat at the hands of the Midwest Rangers National. Max Franklin stymied the Braves’ bats with fastballs reaching 89 MPH en route to being named the winning pitcher.

The Braves failed to score any runs on Thursday as Marucci Raley rolled to a convincing 8-0 win. Caden Lemons had a spectacular outing with eight strikeouts and zero earned runs in a complete game performance.

Mission Team Baseball had back-to-back match-ups versus Team Rawlings PBF and Tri-State Arsenal. They rocked Team Rawlings 8-0 in sixth innings, due in large part to a three-RBI game by Crews Taylor.

Tri-State Arsenal would prove to be a tougher test for Mission Team Baseball. They could not keep up with Davis Schneider and the explosive offense of Tri-State Arsenal. Schneider’s bases-clearing double in the fourth inning was the exclamation point on his team’s 9-2 victory.

The Arsenal improved their resume with an 11-1 thrashing of the Indian Springs Stingers courtesy of Jordan Winston’s ten strikeout performance. The Stingers managed one hit off of Winston all game. David Lamanna recorded a game-high five RBIs with a pair of singles.

The SA Angels Blue overwhelmed the ABD Bulldogs 7-2 with six runs in the opening two innings. Six players on the Angels notched an RBI in a complete team effort.

Facing a four-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Columbine Elite overcame the odds with a six-run rally to surpass the Charleston Braves 7-5. The Elite snatched the lead after Tanner Barnes’ clutch RBI single to right field.

Kyler McMahan contributed greatly to the Rijo Athletics’ 3-2 triumph over the Gulf Breeze Dolphins with a pair of timely doubles. He also spelled the Athletics’ ace, Drew Santana, to record the final out.

Marucci Trosclair fell to Elite Baseball Training-Chicago 7-1 due in large part to Ryan Eiermann, who allowed four hits and one run in six innings. However, Marucci would get back in the win column as they bested the South Troy Dodgers 4-2 in a close contest on Field 12.
