15u Championship Recap: Day 4

Jordan Posway
It was win or go home as the 15u teams commenced bracket play Sunday morning at LakePoint. After a thrilling slate of quarterfinal games, the four semifinalists have been determined. Here is a brief recap of the events from the round of eight:

The 643 DP Cougars narrowly escaped the Northwest Bandits Black 2-1 thanks to Ryan Miller’s late RBI single. Miller’s shot to center field brought home the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carter Buchanan commanded the hill for the final two innings, and put the finishing touches on the Cougars' quarterfinal victory.

Randick Tyler and Brandon Birdsell teamed up for a no-hitter in the Michigan Elite’s 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Spikes. Tyler had a phenomenal day as he fanned five batters in his six-inning stint on the mound. The Elite scored the only run of the game in the third inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Jafet Cruz. Birdsell spelled Tyler in the seventh inning, and retired the side to secure a semifinal berth.

Tied at three runs apiece in the seventh inning, Devin Warner connected on a clutch double that would bring home the game-winning run in the East Cobb Braves’ 4-3 victory over Marucci Forbes. The Braves never trailed after a two-run surge in the top of the first. Davis Sharpe tossed two hitless innings to close the door on Marucci, clinching a semifinal match with the 643 DP Cougars Montgomery.

Tri-State Arsenal crushed the Chattanooga Mustangs 10-2 in a dominant five-inning display. Brandon Neeck kept the Mustangs’ offense to a minimum with seven punch-outs in a complete game four-hitter. Chris Sabino supplied five-runs of offense on three extra-base hits. He doubled in the first, tripled in the fourth, and homered in the fifth. The Arsenal will meet the Michigan Elite tomorrow morning with a championship game appearance on the line.

The semifinal round will commence Sunday evening at 7:30, as the 643 DP Cougars will butt heads with the East Cobb Braves. The Michigan Elite and Tri-State Arsenal will clash Monday morning at 10:15.
