In the first update to our initial Top 50 High School Team Rankings, many changes have taken place, including a change in the top overall team. Coppell (Texas) has taken over the No. 1 spot from Huntington Beach, on the heels of a 14-0 start behind absolutely dominant pitching.

As a matter of fact, the whole top five looks rather different, with three new teams sliding up after hot starts. Hamilton (Ariz.), JSerra (Calif.) and Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.) all started the season ranked relatively high, but find themselves at new heights in the rankings after excellent starts to the 2016 season.

Rounding out the top 10 are a pair of Florida schools – Westminster Christian and Marjory Stoneman Douglas – as well as Oxford (Miss.), Flower Mound (Texas) and Walton (Ga.).

After winning the Perfect Game High School Showdown this past weekend, Sparkman (Ala.) makes their rankings debut, checking in at No. 14 overall. They really dominated high-level competition all weekend, securing victories over several ranked schools, including Buford (Ga.), Parkview (Ga.) and Gulliver Prep (Fla.). They have started their season hot, and the argument can easily be made that no one in the country has as many wins over high quality opponents that they do.

Several other newcomers find themselves in this edition of the rankings. Orange Lutheran (Calif.), Tampa Jesuit (No. 16), Madison (Va.), De La Salle (Calif.) and Christian Brothers (Tenn.) are all ranked by Perfect Game for the first time on the young season, and all are looking to climb.

Several ranked schools have yet to start their seasons due to cold weather climates, so they have remained stagnant as far as rankings are concerned, and will do so until they begin play. These schools include Regis Jesuit (Colo.), Moeller (Ohio), Brother Rice (Mich.), St. Joseph's Regional (N.J.), St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.), Gloucester Catholic (N.J.) and Poly Prep Country Day (N.Y.).

As the season really gets going across the country, and as the weather finally heats up across the northern parts of the nation, these rankings will become a bit more fluid. Stay tuned week to week so see who's climbing, who's falling and who is really making a case to be the No. 1 team in the nation.
