Knoxville Yard Wins 2009 Grads/16u National Championship

After five straight days of rain filled baseball, it was only fitting to have an hour rain delay to start championship Sunday. Once the teams took the field, the Knoxville Yard got down to business beating #2 seed Team Georgia and then Rockdale Rhinos in the Championship game to take home the title.

The Rhinos took the lead early in the Championship with Dustin Dunlop leading off the bottom half of the 1st with a double and eventually scored on a Tyler Austin groundout. The Yard took the lead for good in the 3rd inning with a big 2-out double by Matthew Kirkland scoring three runs. Cade Stallings threw 6 innings to win the game, giving up 7 hits and 2 ERs.

Taking home the MVP trophy for the tournament was Rockdale Rhinos Buck Farmer. Throughout the tournament, Buck was involved in all of the Rhinos wins, batting over .400 with 5 doubles and 7 RBIs. He also took the mound in the 2nd round of the playoffs, throwing a 2-hit complete game shutout verses Palm Beach PAL. The Most Valuable Pitcher for the tournament was Taylor Gouffon of Knoxville Yard. He went 2-0 on the week, giving up 6 hits total. He also threw a no-hitter verses the East Cobb Titans in their quarterfinal matchup.

The US Athletic Nationals beat the Homeplate Angels to win the Consolation Championship.
