Spring League Week 4 Preview

Steve James
Spencer Van Scoyoc vs Keaton Winn pitching matchup
4/10/16 - 11:30 AM - Cedar Falls HS

This weekend's top pitching matchup puts Spencer Van Scoyoc (2016 - Jefferson HS) and the Purple Haze (5-3-1) vs Keaton Winn (2016 - Pekin HS) and the Navy Seals (2-6-2) at 11:30 AM at Cedar Falls HS.  Van Scoyoc has been dominant allowing just 2 hits in 7 innings of work.  Some of the more impressive numbers he's put up so far is a 72.4% first pitch strike ratio, 2.29 strikeouts per inning, and a 3.2 strikeout to walk ratio.  He's put in the work and is taking the steps to being a consistent performer every time out.  His velocity has been steady at 86-88 MPH touching 89 MPH a few times, and with the warmer weather coming I anticipate the velocity to rise as well.  Winn has been equally as dominant in his 6 innings of work so far.  After taking a weekend off to recover from getting his wisdom teeth out, Winn was sharp last weekend at Iowa.  He's pitched at 87-89 MPH consistently and has touched 90 MPH a few times.  He has allowed just 2 hits in his 6 innings of work and has an outstanding strikeout to walk ratio of 13/2!  It shapes up to be a very interesting match-up in week 4 of the Spring League.

Future Iowa Teammates face off
4/10/16 - 4:30 PM - Cedar Falls HS

Grant Judkins (2016 - Pella HS) and Cam Baumann (2017 - Fairfield HS) are slated to be future teammates at the University of Iowa.  They're also slated to pitch against each other this Sunday as the Black Magic (4-3-3) and the Whitecaps (6-3) face off at Cedar Falls HS at 4:30 PM.  Judkins was impressive in his first outing of the season pitching at 86-89 MPH with his fastball with more in the tank.  Baumann has pitched at 83-86 MPH from the left side with more velocity coming as well.  Both are legit two-way prospects and have swung the bat well this spring.

Merrill Looks to extend 5 game hitting streak
4/9/16 - 1:00 PM - Cedar Falls HS

Cooper Merrill (2016 - Clear Lake HS) looks to extend his current 5 game hitting streak this weekend as his Red Dragons (6-3-1) open up against the Green Goblins (4-4).  Merrill has been seeing the ball well and has made consistent hard contact the past 2 weekends.  The Green Goblins will be pitching Lucas Benda (2017 - Waterloo Columbus HS) and Austin Marchesani (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) in game one with Connor Schultz (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) and Elijah Townsend in game two.  Benda has been up to 82 MPH this spring with some pitchability.  Marchesani is a strike throwing right hander with the ability to miss barrels, so Merrill has his work cut out for him to keep the streak alive.

Hitters to watch

Keep an eye on Cameron Steffen (2017 - Dubuque Senior HS) this weekend.  He's the current leader in the league in hits and has shown a good approach at the plate this spring.

Jaden Rolffs (2018 - Pella HS) has swung the bat well every time I've had the chance to see him play.  He's a solid young catcher with good skills.

Nate Stolze (2017 - Urbandale HS) had himself a good weekend last week going 5 for 7 with 2 doubles.  He has a good swing from the right side and has some bat speed.  He looks to continue his hot streak this weekend.

Gregory Bennett (2017 - Western Dubuque HS) is making his first appearance in the league this year after sustaining a hip flexor strain in track a few weeks back.  He looked good earlier this winter indoors when I had the chance to see him, so look for him to swing the bat well.

Ben Norman (2016 - Roosevelt HS) has made consistent hard contact all spring.  Look for him to continue that this weekend.
