Boston College 6, No. 7 Louisville 1

While Clemson’s Seth Beer or TCU’s Luken Baker garner a majority of the national headlines in terms of the freshman class, Boston College’s Jacob Stevens also finds his name on the midseason Golden Spike’s watch list and for very good reason. Friday may have given Stevens just his third win of the year to pull his record to 3-2 but that doesn’t truly reflect how dominant he’s been this spring.

Instead, if you look at his ERA (1.02), his batting average against (.173), or the fact that he’s average a strikeout-per-inning while walking just 19 in 53 innings you begin to see what kind of year the young Eagle is actually having. A highly regarded prospect coming out of Avon Prep in Connecticut, Stevens isn’t showing quite the velocity he did as a prep, but then against he hasn’t needed to.

Working in the 89-91 mph range early and bumping a 92 in the second inning, Stevens settled comfortably into the upper-80s for a good part of his outing but it was in this velocity band that we began to see bigger life on the pitch. The Connecticut native shows a rather simple set of mechanics that not only allows him to repeat, but also fill up the strike zone with quality strikes and a full three pitch mix. Staying relatively short with his stride down the mound, Stevens is able to generate sinking life to the bottom of the zone though as the outing progressed it began to develop more running life to his arm side which proved key when facing lefthanded hitters.

Going a career high seven innings, Stevens’ lone run allowed (unearned by the way) came in the top of third and it marked the only time in the game the Cardinals were able to get a runner to third base and eventually to cross home plate. Of his 53 strike outs on the year, four game against Louisville and Stevens was able to do so while showing a full array in his arsenal.
