No. 7 Vanderbilt 5, No. 1 Florida 0

Kyle Wright threw a complete game shutout to lead Vanderbilt to a 5-0 victory over Florida on Saturday evening. With the win the Commodores evened the series up at one a piece, meaning that Sunday's contest will be the rubber match.

One day after Florida’s Logan Shore threw a complete game, Wright, a sophomore righty, carried the load for Vanderbilt. He stymied a quality Florida lineup—albeit one without the services of star first baseman Peter Alonso, who suffered a fracture to his hand after being hit by a Jordan Sheffield fastball on Friday night.

For as great as Sheffield has been for the Commodores this season, Wright has been just as important and dominant. He entered the game with a 1.89 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings pitched, and his full array of quality stuff was on display throughout Saturday’s contest.

Wright owns a tremendous pitcher’s frame and build as he stands in at a well-proportioned and muscular 6-foot-4, 220-pounds. There is still room for him to continue to add some more strength and good weight in both his upper and lower halves as he continues to mature. Wright has a solid delivery, with good direction and tempo throughout, and his arm works through quickly to his mid three-quarters arm slot. At times, he could get caught on the backside and have trouble getting through and extended over his frontside, but one look at Wright’s final line (9 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 10 strikeouts) should be enough to show that those issues and idiosyncrasies were pretty few and far between.
