Stamps Wills 18U Astros to Great Start

Brett Greenberg
MARIETTA, Ga. –  The 2020 WWBA 18U National Championship started off with a bang after the East Cobb Astros 18U took care of the Canes Georgia 17U Gold for their first pool play game of the week.

The Astros were led by Ethan Stamps, class of 2020, behind his two innings of work and his stellar day at the plate. Stamps tallied four strikeouts and only gave up one hit, throwing at about 82 mph. Stamps had a better day at the plate with two gigantic hits, both of which were blasted over the outfield wall, and tallying five RBIs on the day.

Stamps, the number 8 ranked second baseman in the state of Georgia, will be attending Lipscomb University in the fall to continue his playing career while studying business and education.

“It wasn’t too hard of a decision for me,” said Stamps. “Lipscomb is in the middle of a small town where everyone knows each other, and I feel like I have a good chance of getting on the field early my freshman year.”

Stamps is a product of Morton County High School in Madison, Georgia where he was a dual sport athlete until the tenth grade. Stamps was their starting quarterback until he took up baseball as his number one sport.

“Yea, I actually played football in high school too until I decided to put all of my effort and focus into this baseball thing, which has worked out pretty well,” said Stamps.

Although Ethan is headed to the collegiate level as a second baseman, he hopes to get some action on the mound as he has been pitching all of his career. Stamps, primarily a closer throughout the years, proved to his coaches that he can be a starter as well after today’s performance.

“Obviously I am labeled as a second baseman, but I love pitching just as much as second and I am hoping to be able to find my way into the closer role for Lipscomb,” said Stamps.

Stamps was yet another player affected by the Coronavirus pandemic as it cancelled his high school season and delayed the start of summer ball. Ethan was able to get out to the park during the quarantine on his own and work on some things. Stamps says he is primarily focused on swinging at better pitches when he gets to the plate. He was also able to get stronger during his time off with his trainer, someone he has been using for years to get his body ready for the next level. He also wants to be able to easily identify pitches when it comes out of the pitcher’s hand.

Because this is Stamps last season of summer ball, he was asked what his favorite memory was after all the years of travel ball. He mentioned winning the 16U Perfect Game World Series with this same team as a memory he will never forget.

“Man, that’s tough,” said Stamps. “I would have to say just staying in all those different hotels around the country as a team, the best memories were made when we were just hanging out in hotel rooms together.”

If Stamps could offer any advice to those younger than him, he says, “focus on your body and continue to work hard while minimizing distractions.”

Ethan Stamps and the rest of the talented East Cobb Astros 18U squad look to continue their winning ways this summer with the remaining pool play games and bracket play of the 18U WWBA National Championship.
