Team Sheet: Texas State

Isaiah Burrows
What Happened: The Bobcats went a strong 2-1 in the Houston Astros Foundation College Baseball Classic last weekend with their only loss coming at the hands of No. 3 LSU. Texas State had some of the most electric games with a walk-off and a back-and-forth homer fest with Texas. It’s a strong group of underclassmen bats and a group of high end transfers on the hill that have really hit the year off running.

Team Strengths: Offensive Depth Coming Up in Big Moments
Texas State scores runs, and in bunches. They get on base and put constant pressure on an opposing team’s staff from one to nine. When runners are on, expect a huge hit in the extra-base hit variety because that’s what happened over the course of the three-day tournament with a walk-off win and a go-ahead homer in Top 9 on Day 2. The Bobcats have a deeper group of bats that just stay on the barrel and make consistent contact, and seemingly come up with a big swing each time out.

Concerns: Bullpen
The starting pitching has improved and several staters competed against some higher end P5 opponents, but the bullpen was often leaky and let up leads. It potentially really hurt them against Texas as the Longhorns came back with a fury in the seventh before the offense came up big yet again. And simply put, the bullpen collapsed and didn’t have the talent that LSU has on their end to stop the bleeding on Day 3.

Best Player: Chase Mora, 2B

Mora was an immediate standout over the weekend at the Houston Astros College Foundation Classic. The talented sophomore was on the barrel all three days and launched two homers— a walk-off Day 1 and a Grand Slam Day 2— en route to earning Sun Belt Player of the Week honors.

Mora has long been an intriguing follow since his prep days, and it's continued during his college career at Texas State. Coming off an absurd freshman campaign, Mora is catching fire at the plate following a slower start to the 2024 season. It's above-average bat speed with a long, but super loose, whippy swing and the hands fire through the zone. It's comfortable above-average raw power that can flash in game if the bat-to-ball skills continue to get more polished and consistent. Despite some swing-and-miss present, he was on the barrel a good amount and has evident feel to hit, just a matter of consistently showing it throughout the course of a season. Mora more than held his own at second base defensively. He projects there at the next level and made an awfully impressive diving play Games 1 and 2 ranging to his left. There's instincts and sound hands up the middle that can translate with more of an average arm. He's a good 2025 draft follow with good tools and his in-game performance continues to impress.
