Tuesday takes

Texas: The Longhorns defeated the Bobcats earlier this season, and it was much of the same Tuesday in a 2-0 victory. UT starting pitcher Sam Stafford allowed just two hits in three shutout innings, while freshman closer Corey Knebel struck out the side to end the game. Texas State wasted a solid start from Travis Ballew, who allowed just three hits in five shutout frames. The Bobcats continue to have issues recording solid midweek wins.

Arizona State: The Sun Devils might be behind Oregon State in the Pac-10 standings, but they can hang their hats on having total control of rival Arizona this season. The Devils once again beat the Wildcats on Tuesday, claiming a 4-3 triumph. Arizona State starting pitcher Kyle Ottoson was lifted after allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings, while the bullpen pieced things together with Alex Blackford, Trevor Williams and Mitchell Lambson leading the way. ASU was led at the plate by catcher Xorge Carrillo, who smacked two doubles and knocked in two runs. ASU now is 4-1 against the rival Wildcats.

Oklahoma: The Sooners hope to finish the season on a high note and host an NCAA Regional. To do that, they need a strong week with TCU and Texas on the schedule. Well, the Sooners started the week on a positive note with a 7-4 triumph over the Horned Frogs. Oklahoma starting pitcher Bobby Shore only lasted three innings, but Dillon Overton relieved him and proceeded to allow just a run on a hit in four innings. Offensively, Evan Mistich recorded three hits while leadoff hitter Eric Ross and outfielder Casey Johnson each had two hits. The win over TCU was important from an RPI standpoint.

Georgia: The Bulldogs had a chance to meet with injured teammate Johnathan Taylor today, and Taylor even made a trip to Turner Field as his team finally defeated rival Georgia Tech, 6-4. The Bulldogs used six pitchers in the game, with closer Tyler Maloof earning his 14th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. Offensively, leadoff hitter Levi Hyams and Kyle Farmer led the way. Hyams went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Farmer went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. The Bulldogs, who have a solid RPI, now are two games over .500 after the win over the Yellow Jackets.

UCLA: The Bruins were close to earning a road series win over Stanford last weekend before the bullpen imploded. But they bounced back in a big way on Tuesday with a 6-1 triumph over UC Irvine. Bruins starting pitcher Zack Weiss struck out four and allowed just a run on three hits in seven innings, while third baseman Cody Regis paced the offense with two hits (one double) and three RBIs. The loss was a tough one to swallow for the Anteaters, who have a rather weak RPI and poor postseason resume.

Alabama: The Crimson Tide has struggled the past few weeks, but it finally had something to smile about on Tuesday with an important 7-3 road win over Southern Mississippi. Alabama starting pitcher Adam Windsor was lifted after allowing two runs in three innings, but reliever Taylor Wolfe was fantastic. Wolfe struck out five in 3 1/3 shutout innings. Offensively, shortstop Jared Reaves led the charge with four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. We’ll see if the game was a confidence booster when the Tide faces Mississippi State later this week.

UAB: The Blazers made a huge statement last weekend when they earned a Conference USA series win over Rice. Their postseason resume received another boost on Tuesday with a solid 4-3 triumph over ranked Troy. UAB starting pitcher David Hayes allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings, while reliever Mark McKinley was fantastic, allowing just one hit in 3 1/3 shutout innings. Offensively, outfielder Jamal Austin led the way with a pair of hits and an RBI. The Blazers climbed into the RPI Top 50 with the win.

Kansas State: The Wildcats are hitting the right buttons as they get ready for the final stretch of the regular season. K-State earned a series sweep over Texas Tech last weekend and now has earned a midweek series sweep over Cal State Bakersfield after winning 9-0 on Tuesday. KSU starting pitcher Blake Freeman struck out four in five shutout innings, while Jared King paced the offense with a 4-for-4 day, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. The Wildcats might just be on the good side of the bubble in this week’s projections.

Southeastern Louisiana: Despite an average conference record, it might just be tough to leave the Lions out of the NCAA postseason at the end of the year. They earned yet another solid win on Tuesday, hitting the road and beating Louisiana-Lafayette 6-2. Lions starting pitcher Jordan Hymel allowed just two runs in 5 2/3 innings, while reliever Jason Greenleaf struck out four in 3 1/3 shutout innings. Offensively, second baseman Jonathan Pace went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys might be catching Kansas State at the wrong time later this week. The Pokes now have lost four-straight vgames after hitting the road and dropping a 6-5 decision to Wichita State. Wichita State first baseman Johnny Coy had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, a run scored and four RBIs. Shockers designated hitter Preston Springer added a pair of hits in the game. For the Pokes, catcher Jared Womack led the way with four hits.
