Perfect Game's First Look at the Top 300 Prospects in the Current Year's Crop

The Houston Astros will have first pick in the 2012 first-year player draft and the team's primary options would appear to be two big, hard-throwing California righthanders: Lucas Giolito of Harvard-Westlake High in Los Angeles and Mark Appel of Stanford.

Giolito and Appel rank 1-2 on Perfect Game's first expanded look at the top prospects in the current year's draft class. A list of the top 300, as assembled by PG's Allan Simpson and David Rawnsley, is listed below.

The Astros would have little to distinguish between Giolito and Appel as both are projectable 6-foot-5 pitchers with fastballs that have registered in the mid- to high-90s.  If anything, Giolito might have the advantage over Appel as he is three years younger. But Giolito also has 47 years of draft history working against him as no high school righthander has ever been selected with the No. 1 overall pick.

With the 2012 draft set for June 4-6, the Astros, who last had the top selection in 1992, still have eight months to weigh in on their pick. While much is likely to change between now and then, Giolito and Appel should be the two most closely-watched players in this year's draft pool when the 2012 college and high-school seasons opens in February.
