PG COLLEGE PREVIEW 2012: TOP 100 COUNTDOWN (61-80) |
61. Gonzaga |
2011 record: 32-19 overall, 15-6 WCC
Key returnees : OF Billy Moon (.337/4/31), 3B Eric Lane (.314/1/19), UTI Marcos Gonzales (.291/0/14; 11-2, 2.57), OF Royce Bolinger (.283/3/25), LHP Tyler Olson (6-5, 3.97), RHP Andy Hunter (2-3, 3.43)
The skinny: The Bulldogs certainly lost a pair of key cogs after last season in starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter and stud closer Cody Martin, but still are expected to compete for the West Coast Conference crown this spring. Gonzaga welcomes back a weekend rotation with much upside, the trio including veteran Tyler Olson, Andy Hunter (part-time starter last season) and left-handed stud Marco Gonzalez. Gonzales topped out at 92 mph during fall workouts. Meanwhile, Hunter is 87-92 with his fastball with good control of his curveball and changeup, while Olson is 86-90 with his fastball, while also having a still developing slider. Meanwhile, freshman Kevin Moriarty is one to watch. He’s a tall guy at 6-foot-6, and was 89-92 with his fastball in the fall. He strongly recovered from a high school elbow injury … Offensively, the Bulldogs are in good shape with the return of a strong nucleus, including four of their top six hitters in Billy Moon, Eric Lane, Marco Gonzales and Royce Bolinger. Still, the Bulldogs would like to have a couple of guys step up, perhaps shortstop Cameron Alvarado, who had a strong fall.
Expectation level: Gonzaga came close to reaching the NCAA postseason in 2011, but fell just short of the goal. This season, the Bulldogs must start the season on a high note with a strong showing in non-conference play. The Bulldogs should at least be in the at-large discussion at the end of the spring. |
