Florida’s Fifth-Ranked Polk State First to Punch Ticket

The top five teams in Perfect Game’s ranking of the nation’s Top 50 Junior College Teams have remained unchanged for a month, but Florida’s Polk State, ranked No. 5, has achieved the most-noteworthy development in that period.

On Monday, Polk State became the first team to qualify for this year’s Junior College World Series as it came out of the loser’s bracket to win two games on the final day of the Florida community-college state championship. The Vikings beat No. 15-ranked Palm Beach State in the deciding game, 8-4, to push its record on the season to 42-9.

Nine more teams will join Polk State at the Junior College World Series, scheduled for May 26-June 2 in Grand Junction, Colo., by qualifying through various regional and district tournaments over the next two weeks.

Post-season play is well underway on a number of fronts nationally as teams vie for a number of championships—both at the national and state levels.

California’s Orange Coast College (33-4-1) continues to hang on to its No. 1 ranking that it has held since March. The Pirates have only a state championship to contend for as California junior colleges do not participate in the Junior College World Series, but they won their first two games of the 36-team California state junior-college tournament, advancing to the state’s Round of 16. The four survivors of Super Regional play meet in the state final May 18-20.

At No. 2, Iowa Western (51-4), the 2010 national champion, is Perfect Game’s highest-ranked team that is eligible to participate in the Junior College World Series. The Reivers begin regional play Friday. No. 3-ranked Walters State (49-8), the 2006 national champion, won its first game Monday at the Tennessee junior-college championship tournament, while Texas’ No. 4-ranked Howard College (41-10), the 2009 national champion, opens play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 5 tournament Saturday.

Meanwhile, the NJCAA Division II and Division III national tournaments have also gotten underway, with the D-II World Series scheduled for Enid, Okla., May 26-June 2 and D-III World Series slated for Tyler, Texas, May 19-25. LSU-Eunice (48-4) is the top-ranked D-II team in the Perfect Game Top 50 at No. 10.

Teams in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, consisting of 28 junior colleges in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, will contend for their own championship, beginning in the next two weeks. Defending champion Bellevue (Wash.) CC is the NWAACC’s top-ranked team, remaining steady at No. 33.
