College Top 25: Movin' on up

Kendall Rogers

There haven't been many changes in the top five of the Perfect Game College Top 25 the last month of the college baseball season for good reason, but that trend finally shifted gears this week, as Vanderbilt inched closer to the top spot to headline the rankings.

Despite going 2-2 last week, along with a weekend series split with rival North Carolina State, North Carolina remains the nation's top-ranked team with an incredible 41-4 overall record. Meanwhile, the Commodores vaulted from No. 3 to No. 2 after beating Louisville in midweek action and sweeping Mississippi State over the weekend. Of course, the 'Dores leapfrogged LSU, which dropped a tough home series to South Carolina and fell just one spot to No. 3.

Cal State Fullerton again is No. 4 in the latest rankings after a road series win over Hawaii, while N.C. State, which had a 2-1 week, inched upward again from No. 6 to No. 5. Also worth noting, Virginia dropped one spot to No. 6 after a tough series loss at Virginia Tech, while Oregon State, Arizona State, Florida State and UCLA round out the top 10.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Louisville, Arkansas, Oregon and South Carolina remain the same after each having solid weeks on the baseball diamond, while Oklahoma moved from No. 16 to No. 15 after a weekend series win over Texas Tech, and Mississippi State dropped from No. 15 to No. 17 after getting swept at Vanderbilt over the weekend.

The rest of the rankings saw significant changes with UNC Wilmington, Gonzaga and Stanford each dropping out. The Seahawks dropped a road series to Towson, Gonzaga had a less than stellar week, and Stanford got swept on the road by Oregon.

Clemson, Virginia Tech and New Mexico entered the rankings. The Tigers made a sizable climb back into the rankings after a home series win over Georgia Tech, the Hokies captured their second series win over a top-10 club, and New Mexico is one of the nation's hottest teams with a 10-game winning streak.

The Perfect Game College Top 25 is released each Monday during the season.
