I had never seen Ryan McMahon play before August 5, 2012, the first day of the Area Code Games. After watching batting practice and infield and part of the first game I turned to the Southern California area scout sitting next to me, a long-time friend, and asked, “Do you guys out here realize that that McMahon is a first round draft pick type of player? He’s Corey Seager (the Dodgers 2012 first round pick) with a better swing!”

He answered somewhat cautiously, as scouts are prone to do when asked their opinion so bluntly, “Well, we know he’s good, but we really haven’t figured out how good yet.”

They have it figured out now.
