It’s no secret in scouting that sometimes timing and luck play a role in getting a player drafted. Scouting directors and cross-checkers, the decision makers when it comes to the top round draft picks, often don’t get multiple looks at a player during the spring. And everyone, no matter how talented, has a bad day now and again. For a high school hitter, it can be even worse, as most top prospect high school hitters are pitched around, thrown a steady diet of breaking balls, or both. The top high school hitters get used to regular extra batting practice sessions before or after games in the spring just for the national level scouts.

Timing and simple good fortune have definitely played a role in Perfect Game All-American outfielder Billy McKinney’s spring.
