Marietta,
Ga. – Things are going well for the Slammers, who now have two wins
and a tie under their belt at the 2013 WWBA 15u National
Championship.
Slammers
Black racked up an 11-run victory over Knights Baseball 15u National,
and a 1-to-1 tie with the East Cobb Braves 15u in their double header
at North Cobb Christian on Saturday.
The
Slammers finished their first game against the Knights with 12 hits
and nine RBI, with eight of their 13 runs being scored in the seventh
inning. Paul Tillotson led the team in RBI by hitting a three-run
homer in the seventh inning.
The
Slammers also played well in the field. They didn't commit an error
and had two double plays. Right-hander Wyatt Featherston pitched 5
1/3 innings collecting four strikeouts while only giving up two runs.
Jake Clark pitched the 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit while
striking out two.
“Hopefully
they keep doing well,” said Head Coach Mark Holzemer.
In
game two against the Braves, Tillotson, also a right handed pitcher,
tossed all seven innings for the Slammers, giving up only five hits
while striking out seven.
Featherston,
who went 3-for-6 on the day in addition to his strong pitching
performance, hit a triple in the sixth inning scoring the Slammers
one and only run. Unfortunately for the Slammers, the Braves scored
in the seventh inning ending the game in a tie.
“We
brought (the team) here last year and finished, I think, sixth in the
14-year old division, so we wanted to come back with the same group
of guys and see how we do in this division,” explained Holzemer.
The
Slammers came down from Colorado in hopes of facing better
competition.
“In
Colorado, we don’t see this kind of baseball as much as we do out
here.
“Baseball’s
a lot more of a priority down here so it’s good for our guys to
come down and see the type of guys that play down here and the type
of baseball they (play),” added Holzemer. “It’s really good for
our guys to come compete against these guys.”
The
Slammers program has been traveling south for Perfect Game events for
six or seven years now, according to Holzemer.
“We’re
lucky to come to the Perfect Game events and do pretty well, and it’s
been great baseball for us,” said Holzemer. “It’s something
we’re definitely going to continue to do because it definitely
helps our guys.”
