Summer Collegiate : : Story
Around the Cape: July 2

There’s no place like the Cape Cod League when it comes to evaluating the best draft talent college baseball has to offer on a day-to-day basis. And, with that said, Perfect Game will be bringing you a weekly scouting notebook from around the league, highlighting not just top performances, but recognizing players whose tools are standing out to professional scouts. This notebook is not a statistical roundup of the week’s top performers - it only is scouting based. And, only the players I’ve scouted first hand week to week will be included.

The good news around the Cape is that the hitter friendly baseballs that became so well known in 2012 (as offensive records were obliterated around the league) are no more. The pitchers are clearly back in charge. And we’ll begin by talking about some of the arms that have stood out thus far.

The Scouting Hot List

Spencer Turnbull, RHP, Alabama (Wareham) - Turnbull was as advertised this week in terms of having the big fastball and the ease in which he produces it. Pitching in Brewster on the 24th, Turnbull lived at 91-94 mph, topping out at 95 on several occasions. The fastball has good, late movement down in the zone and he stays off the barrel. But, his secondaries are going to need work. His breaking ball gets a little soft and loose for a pitcher with his arm speed. He pitches aggressively, though, and cruises mostly on the strength of that moving fastball. This will be a big summer of development for him as a prospect. He has a big league body type and a first round type arm.
