Perfect Game All-American righthanded pitcher and outfielder Zack Shannon (Cincinnati, Ohio) was injured on a non-contact play at the plate in the Midland Redskins 2-1 loss to the Marlins Scout Team Saturday afternoon. Shannon had moved to the mound in relief late in the game and was throwing in the 92-94 mph range when a pitch got away from his catcher with a runner on third base. His leg gave way when pivoting quickly to make the tag at the plate and the game was stopped and Shannon taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The injury, which appeared more serious initially, was diagnosed as a dislocated left ankle per Redskins coach Brian Hiler and Shannon was released from the hospital shortly after 5:00 p.m.

The Perfect Game staff and greater Perfect Game community extends their best wishes and hopes for a quick recovery to Zack and his family over the coming months.

Texas Scout Team Yankees righthanded pitcher Beau Burrows (2015, Weatherford, Texas) created quite a stir this summer, topping out at 96 mph at the 16u WWBA National Championship in July and coming back to touch 94 mph at the Area Code Games in August. He turned in a very solid three-inning outing Saturday afternoon, maintaining his velocity at 90-93 mph throughout and showing good feel for a short 79-82 mph slider that acted almost like a change up for him at times. Burrows picked up a couple of strikeouts on the pitch.

Burrows actual changeup was a bit harder at 85-86 mph. The Perfect Game field scout had the opportunity between innings to ask the home plate umpire if he thought the pitch was a two-seam fastball due to its velocity and hard, late diving action and the umpire confirmed with the catcher that it was indeed a change, as Burrows only fastball was a four-seamer.

The junior Texas A&M commit has a fairly unusual delivery that invokes the thought “rear back and fire,” but he repeats it well and was around the strike zone with all his pitches, although he did tend to miss up in the zone with his fastball. Burrows is listed at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds but that appears to be an old set of measurements, as he eyeballs an inch or two taller with broad shoulders and good overall present strength
