Eshelman a special type of pitcher

WACO, Texas — Cal State Fullerton has one of the nation’s elite starting rotations, and one of the more intriguing overall arms in the country in sophomore right-hander Thomas Eshelman.

By now, there’s no questioning Eshelman as a household name in college baseball. After all, he had a stellar freshman campaign that earned him much recognition. The righty tallied an incredible 1.48 earned-run average in 115 2/3 innings, along with 83 strikeouts and most notably just three walks. The Titans as a whole last season only had 86 walks.

Emulating last year’s success this season will be a difficult chore for the talented righty, but he’s off to another brilliant start, tossing an absolute gem in his latest start against Baylor last weekend.

“There’s nothing really [he needs to improve on], it’s as good as it gets as far as I’m concerned,” Cal State Fullerton coach Rick Vanderhook said. “His command is as good as anyone pitching in the big leagues, and I thought we had a tight, but good, strike zone in this game.

“Even with that strike zone, it didn’t matter to Thomas,” he continued. “He elevated when he wanted to, and he was really good in doing it.”
