Clearly teams are showing more patience and prudence during difficult economic times. They’re waiting out players, knowing the longer they wait, the more cost-effective the remaining available players will be.

Big-league clubs generally convene their area scouts for pre-draft meetings in January to formulate follow lists for the coming college and high-school seasons. Assembling some sort of a priority ranking of elite talent in the traditional hotbeds is generally a relatively easy exercise, but lining up the best college talent in Florida this year may be a bit more challenging.

As the summer showcase season winds down we’re starting to get a much more clear idea of how the talent for the 2010 draft is going to shake out. There are always players that emerge during the spring, but rarely does a player come out of nowhere to establish himself as a premium professional baseball prospect.

LAKELAND, Fla.--Many of the players on this list actually play a middle infield position for their high school team. But in our evaluations, PG scout Cliff Pastornicky and myself determined these players as most likely to end up as corner infielders if and when they reach the big leagues. Whether it’s because of their size or their lack of agility beyond two or three steps, we believed that these players profiled best at the corners.

I have two motivations for writing this article. One is simply the realization that money is the driving force over draft position. This goes for both players and teams. Signability has become so much a part of the June draft that the best players are no longer chosen in order of ability.

LAKELAND, Fla.--While most all of the catchers at the ECPBS will receive pro attention going into the 2010 draft, there doesn’t seem to be any who are destined for the first two rounds. It’s a trend apparent around the country following a 2009 draft that was loaded with high-end prep backstops.

LAKELAND, Fla.--From what I’ve seen, it’s a comparatively weak year for prep lefties. No one jumps out as a 1st-round pick at the moment though there is a handful with the potential to emerge as such.
