While his changeup may need work -- his arm slowed when throwing the pitch -- he showed control to both sides of the plate with his armside run fastball (74-79 MPH), while his curveball (68-71 MPH) proved to be his out pitch, featuring late break and overall solid arm action.

Blake Bottomley (2015, Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS, FL) supplied the game's only power for both teams, managing a run-scoring fly ball double to center field in the top of the first inning for South Florida. Right-handed pitcher Tim Carter (2015, Suwannee HS, FL), threw the most noteworthy stuff of the day for the Hardballers, flashing a sinking changeup and a curveball that clocked in consistently at 69-71 MPH. His fastball sat in the 79-83 MPH range, too, helping him strike out four and walk two batters in three innings of work.

Anthony Gomez (2015, City/Pembroke Pines Charter HS, FL) led the way offensively for Elite Squad, registering a team-high two hits (both singles). Upstate Mavericks 18U pile on Team Molina18U 8-1

5/25/2014

Upstate Mavericks 18U tallied 15 hits and their pitching allowed only three hits in their 8-1 win over Team Molina 18U.

Navy commit Charlie Bishop (2015, Hillcrest HS, SC) maneuvered his way through the Team Molina line up, allowing just one run in six innings on three hits, two walks and three punch outs. His fastball sat 74-80 mph, reaching back for 82 mph when he needed, and he mixed in a few 64 mph curves. He featured sound mechanics, getting good extension out front with a good follow through and solid arm action. The ball comes from a high 3/4 arm slot with a short arm circle in back and he pitches downhill and throws easy. Bishop has good makeup and good baseball instincts.

The offense was led by a 2-hole hitter Jon Rosoff (2014, Daniels HS, NC), an Army commit. He was 3-4 with a triple, two singles, three runs batted in, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Austin Murphy (2014, Episcopal HS, FL) had a perfect 4-4 game with a double, three singles and an RBI. Murphy is an Auburn commit. Another D1 commit O'Kevius Conway (2014, Clinton HS, SC) was 2-4 out of the three spot, driving in two with a run scored and a double. He was caught stealing, struck out once, and is set to attend powerhouse South Carolina. Corneluis Randolph (2015, Griffin HS, GA) singled twice, walked once, drove in one and scored once as the clean up hitter. Randolph will be going to Clemson University.

Team Molina got a two hit game from Robert Prosser (2014, New Smyrna Beach HS, FL) and he came around to score the only run of the game. Justin Franklin (2014, University Orange City HS, FL) got the only other hit while Brady Mintell (2014, University HS, FL) and Ricky Tauscher (2014, New Smyrna Beach HS, FL) reached base on a walk. Franklin is a Daytona State College commit and drove in Prosser with the only run of the game. Tauscher also made a fielding error.

Wyatt Boyle (2014, Deltona HS, FL) started the game and allowed a pair of runs in 2.1 innings. He allowed five hits without walking anyone and struck out one. 5/25/2014

Two runs in the first inning established a lead Orlando Baseball Academy 2015 would never relinquish, and they would go on to defeat South Florida Huskies 18U 5-3 in a Sunday consolation game at City of Palms Park.

Orlando's offense was jumpstarted by three-hole hitter Evan Lowe (2015, The Masters Academy, FL). Lowe had three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored another, and even pitched a scoreless inning on the mound. Nathan Sterijevski (2015, East Ridge HS, FL) was the beneficiary of Lowe's hot hitting, as the cleanup hitter crossed home plate three times in the win. Orlando also received a double from Bo Simmons (2015, Boone HS, FL).

Orlando used seven pitchers in the seven innings, with no hurler tossing more than two innings. The best outing was turned in by Jake Ratledge (2016, Apopka HS, FL), who did not allow a run or a hit in his 1.2 innings of work. Simmons' one inning saw him record an 84 mph fastball, as did the inning of work from Lowe. Ratledge's top fastball clocked in at 76 mph.

Martina Brendly (2014, Highlands Christian Academy, FL) produced at the top of the order for the Huskies, supplying a double, a single, a run scored, and another batted in. Fred Matos (2015, Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL) and Samyr Santos (2015, West Broward HS, FL) also added RBIs for the Huskies.

Lopez Blanks Florida as Elite 17U Wins 4-0

5/25/2014

Elite Performance Baseball 17U received an impressive start from 5-foot-11, 150-pound right handed pitcher Jonathon Lopez (2016, Doral Academy Charter HS, FL) Sunday afternoon at the 2014 18U East Memorial Day Classic tournament against Florida Tornadoes 18U, and that proved to be one of the key factors in 17U's 4-0 shutout victory.

Lopez didn't feature overpowering stuff -- 72-76 MPH fastball, 67-69 MPH curveball, 64-67 MPH changeup -- in his start, but evidently, it was enough to stymie Florida, who went 5-20 combined at the plate against him. A Doral, Fla., native, Lopez went the full seven innings without allowing an earned run to cross home, striking out three batters, walking one to go with five hits allowed on the day.

Second baseman and lead-off hitter Brian Frias (2016, Doral Academy Charter HS, FL) went 2-3 at the plate for Elite Performance, amassing a game-high two stolen bases and a run scored in the affair. Chris Baetzel (2014, Western HS, FL) provided the lone extra-base hit of the game for Florida, a fly ball double to left center gap that helped him go 1-2 on the day.

PBC PAL 17U scrapes by Coastal 2-1

5/25/2014

Kevin LaRosa (2015, Nathan B. Forrest HS, FL) and Ricky Miranda (2015, Coral Springs Christian Academy, FL) faced off in a great pitcher's duel between Coastal Prospects National and PBC PAL 17U in a second round playoff match. Miranda and the PBC PAL 17U squad came out on top with a go ahead bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning.

Miranda worked six innings with one unearned run allowed on two its and two walks. He struck out eight and worked his fastball in the 84-87 mph range with life, topping out at 88 mph. He also threw a good curve in the 70-74 mph range from a high 3/4 arm angle. Miranda showed good command with a deceptive, smooth delivery with sound mechanics. He pitched down hill and uses his lower half well with good hip rotation. Kyle Farjad (2016, Seminole Ridge Community HS, FL) closed it out with a scoreless seventh, earning the save while not allowing a hit with a walk and strike out. Farjad went almost exclusively fastball, only throwing one breaking ball, a 71 mph curve ball. His heater was 87-89 mph, peaking at 89.

Pemron Burrows (2015, Coral Springs Christian Academy, FL) worked the walk that gave them the lead, striking out twice and also getting hit by a pitch earlier in the game. Chris Canavan (2015, American Heritage HS, FL) had the other RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, part of his 0-2 day. Jared Schwait (2015, North Broward Prep HS) worked two walks and stole a pair of bases while Bowling walked, struck out and was hit by a pitch. Edmond Americaan (2016, Trinity Christian Academy, FL) was 0-3 with two strike outs, but was also hit by a pitch, stole a base and made an error.

LaRosa worked 5.2 frames for Coastal Prospects National, allowing one unearned run on four hits, one walk, two hit batters, and eight punch outs. He also uncorked a wild pitch. The 5'9 170 pound lefty maintained the velocity on his 76-81 mph fastball from a high 3/4 arm slot, peaking at 84 mph. He showcased a good delivery, getting good hip rotation, extension out from and a good follow through. LaRosa also fields his position well, knows how to control the running game with a quick pace, and is a prototpyical crafty lefty. His two off speed pitches were a 66-72 mph curve and a 69-74 mph change up. Skylar Arias (2015, Oakleaf HS, LF), another southpaw, was called on in relief and was wild, walking three batters and hitting one with a strike out in 1.1 innings. He took the loss but was bringing his fastball 77-83 mph, topping out at 85 with one 76 mph curve and one 77 mph change up mixed in.

Dillon Reed (2015, Creekside HS, FL) walked, singled, and was caught stealing. Jordan Voiro (2015, Nathan B. Forrest HS, FL) singled and was also nabbed stealing. Those two accounted for all the hits while Jacob Schmidt (2015, Oakleaf HS, FL) and Josh Avlarado (2015, Creekside HS, FL) walked once, rounding out all who reached base in the game.

5/25/2014

Florida Pokers Upperclass Carolina pitchers struck out a combined 10 batters over seven complete innings of work and held Coastal Prospects American's lineup to just a 6-27 day offensively, and that was more than enough for Florida to come away with the 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at North Fort Myers High School field.
