2016 Top Prospects

Dean Looney  OF - 2016 - Matthews, NC
Howard College

Looney had one of the most impressive offensive performances of any prospect we've seen this summer, with legitimate plus bat speed and plus raw power. A cerebral hitter, Looney shows the ability to make adjustments mid at bat, and when combining that intelligence with insanely quick/strong hands, Looney is a threat to hit for high average with very high power numbers as well. He also threw 85 MPH from the OF, showcasing a strong arm to go along with advanced strength and athleticism.

William "Zac" McNeel  RHP - 2016 - Huntington, WV
Marshall

McNeal is a highly-projectable right-hander, standing 6'4" 185 with long limbs and good room to fill out. He was up to 86 MPH with his fastball, and hides the ball exceedingly well in his delivery, to the point where his fastball seems a good 3-4 MPH harder due to that deception. Showed a CB and SL as well, the CB has 12/6 shape and plenty of depth while the SL is sharper, with two-plane bat-missing snap. High upside pitcher.

Riley Zayicek  OF - 2016 - Mooresville, NC
UNC-Wilmington

Zayicek has some of the best arm strength of the entire event, throwing an impressive 93 MPH from the OF and 88 across the infield, with athletic and defensive projection to play both spots at the next level. He also shows impressive strength off his barrel when hitting, with good hands and the ability/bat speed to attack the ball out front and drive it into the gaps.

Kip Brandenburg  SS - 2016 - Greensboro, NC
UNC-Wilmington/Spartanburg Methodist College

Brandenburg showed off some of the more impressive physical tools over the weekend, with legitimate plus raw power in his bat, driving the baseball into the air with authority in both BP and in game. He has impressive strength and bat speed with excellent HR power and more coming. He also showed off his arm strength, throwing 88 MPH from the OF and 85 from the IF, all with a highly athletic and highly projectable frame.

Josh Hollifield  SS - 2016 - Weddington, NC
VMI

The well-built, highly physical 6'3" 200 pound Hollifield had some of the best game swings of the entire weekend, consistently barreling up the ball with plus strength and excellent bat speed, culminating in a line drive HR that got out in a hurry. He moves well defensively and has a very strong arm, throwing 88 MPH across the diamond.

Zackary Byron  LHP - 2016 - Kingsport, TN
Bluefield University/Waubonsee CC

Byron had a very impressive outing on the mound, showing some of the best overall feel for pitching of the entire event. He understands sequencing, the importance of command, and changing speeds at a very high level, and inputs that knowledge into his game. Working 80-83 with his fastball and in the low 70's with his slider, Byron commanded both pitches to all 4 quadrants of the zone and dominated opposing hitters.

Jay Golliday  C - 2016 - Kill Devil Hills, NC
Uncommitted

Golliday showed off impressive athleticism and defensive prowess behind the plate, running a 6.74 60 yard dash and then popping a 1.83 from behind the plate to go along with clean, quick actions and a very strong arm. He also showed a quick bat when at the plate, with easy bat-to-ball skills and projectable power.

Corbin Watson  SS - 2016 - Reidsville, NC
Lenoir-Rhyne

Watson had a very good batting practice and took several quality at bats in game, showing quick hands and an excellent bat path, projecting for both average and power at the next level as he continues to physically mature. He extends well through the ball and drives the ball into the air, and will develop into legitimate power to go along with advanced bat-to-ball skills.

Jake Isbell  RHP - 2016 - Holly Springs, NC
Uncommitted

Isbell pounded the zone to both sides of the plate with a FB that worked 78-83 and topped at 84, showing very good run to the arm side and some occasional sink when down in the zone. He has advanced feel for his slider, with the ability to manipulate the shape of the pitch, from a sharp, shorter true slider to more of a slurvier offering, with command of both.

William Proctor, Jr  OF - 2016 - Germantown, MD
Uncommitted

Proctor stood out with the bat throughout the weekend, showing a consistently quick barrel with good strength and developing power. He made consistent hard contact both during batting practice and in game, and his hands were among the quickest of the event. Also worked out well defensively in the IF, showing accuracy across the diamond with good arm strength.

Zachary Bridges  C - 2016 - Benson, NC
UNC-Wilmington/Brunswick CC

Bridges showed a strong, leveraged swing throughout batting practice, consistently driving the ball into the air and even putting a few over the fence. His swing is built for power and will continue to add more. He also showed well behind the plate, popping a 1.95 and throwing an above-average 76 MPH from the catcher position.

Tyler Penner  LHP - 2016 - Matthews, NC
North Carolina Central

Penner is a very physical lefty with quality feel for pitching to go along with good overall stuff. His FB worked 80-83 MPH and he throws from a high 3/4 arm slot, getting downhill and generating solid plane to the plate. Works quickly and creates some deception with a little bit of funk in his delivery. Showed solid 1/7 CB with depth and solid feel for CH with some fading action.

Jacob Dubs  RHP - 2016 - Greensboro, NC
Rhodes College

At 6'4" 180, Dubs is a highly projectable pitcher with long limbs and broad shoulders, generating good arm speed on the mound with easy projection velocity-wise. He worked 80-83 and topped at 84, and creates deception with those long limbs, making the FB seem even quicker to the opposing hitters. He showed a good straight CH with excellent velocity differential from his FB; and good feel for a 12/6 CB that flashed good depth.

Brandon Merritt  OF - 2016 - Hallsboro, NC
Louisburg College

Merritt showed impressive hitting tools and overall feel for the game throughout the weekend, especially with the bat. With a small, consistent load; Merritt shifts his weight very well into contact and made consistently hard, line drive contact to all fields. Twitchy athleticism throughout his body projects him for both average and power; and he showed well defensively as well, moving to and fielding the baseball well and throwing 82 MPH from the outfield.

2017 Top Prospects

Jacob Brown  RHP - 2017 - McLeansville, NC
High Point

Brown took the mound for the Gold team and showed some of the best velocity of the weekend, topping at 87 with excellent present arm speed and projection for more velocity as well. He uses his strong legs exceedingly well in his delivery, driving to the plate and showing hard sinking life on his FB as well. He also ran a 6.88 60 yard dash and took a quality, projectable batting practice, spraying liners all over the field with good bat speed and some pop.

Reid Johnston  RHP - 2017 - Enfield, NC
North Carolina State

Johnston showed a long, clean arm action on the mound, hiding the ball well in the back and then exploding downhill to the plate and touching 85 with his FB. The pitch has good wiggle to the arm side, allowing it to miss the fat part of the bat even when contacted. His CB showed good shape and depth with some developing snap, and threw strikes with both pitches.

Jordan Varela  SS - 2017 - Raleigh, NC
Bluefield State

Verela had a very good few games with the bat, showcasing a highly projectable, very smooth stroke with quick hands and easy bat speed. He catches the ball out in front and barrels it consistently, extending well through the ball and projecting for more and more power as he continues to physically develop.

Noah Liles  OF - 2017 - Angier, NC
UNC-Wilmington

Liles was very solid throughout all the events of the weekend, showing very good athleticism by clocking a 6.84 60 yard dash and showing smooth, easy athleticism in OF drills, fielding the ball cleanly and showing solid, accurate arm strength. A switch-hitter, he has good feel for the barrel from both sides of the plate with projectable power, making him an intriguing prospect.
