OF Derek McPhearson: McPhearson, a college football recruit to Florida as a wide receiver, furthered his claim as one of the fastest high school baseball players in the country with a 6.48 60 on a wet outfield track that had absorbed 3 inches of rain the night before. McPhearson is a fun exciting athlete to watch run and move around the field. His hitting and defensive skills are very raw at this point, although he certainly has the physical strength and hand/eye coordination to improve with more repetitions in the future.

Derreck is an exceptional athlete being recruited in two sports and is a four tool player. His motions and actions are advanced and quick with exceptional strength. His arm is 83mph from the outfield with good carry. At the plate he hits from the right side with a pro setup that is balanced and solid through contact. He has big time power potential, but needs some help getting his lower half more involved. When he does he will be a big time masher. Top prospect and one the pro scouts should follow closely this spring. Derrick is one of the fastest runners in high school baseball.

McPhearson is considered one of the top high school wide receivers in the country and it’s easy to see why. He has a strong, live body at 6-1, 195 and blazing speed that turned in a 6.38 time in the 60. You can see McPhearson's explosive acceleration about mid-way down the 60 course and defensive backs must learn quickly to fear it as well. His baseball skills are pretty raw but very interesting. McPhearson doesn’t generate MLB bat speed with wood despite his obvious strength. It looks as if he's been taught to put the ball in play and use his great running ability. His swing is contact oriented right now.. He is a terror on the bases once he reaches, as you would expect. There is some serious power potential in this young guy and pro scouts are going to have to use their imagination just a little. Derrick's outstanding athletic ability and adaquate arm should keep him in centerfield for a long time. MLB scouts are going to like him and projection grades might differ, but the sky is the limit.
