Deryk Hooker is a 2007 RHP/1B with a 6'4'', 185 lb. frame from San Diego CA, who attends Mira Mesa. Hooker has a taller body with a lanky build. Hooker pitches from a 3/4 arm slot with a clean arm action. His arm works well and he has good arm speed. Hooker is a max effort pitcher and has good arm strength. He has good mechanics and stays smooth through his delivery. Hooker throws an 11/5 curveball with good spin and some depth. He has good command of the strike zone and locates his pitches well. Hooker can elevate his fastball when needed and will only get better. High ceiling prospect!

Deryk Hooker is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Mira Mesa HS, residing in San Diego, CA. Hooker has a long, lanky, thin body type on his 6'4" 185 lb. frame that should continue to develp. Hooker is not the most polished arm in the '07 class but he does have enough raw ability to have been ranked #49 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a 3/4 slot with a short backside arm action. Hooker has good arm speed and if/when he develops a more compact delivery, his stuff could take a big leap. There are a lot of elbows and knees in that delivery, not so much of a concern as his front side that flies wide open, very early in the delivery. That delivery flaw saps velocity and action on his pitches that he otherwise has naturally. Hooker's fastball touched up to 90 and was 86-88 with good sink. He actually has the type of sink on his fastball that he could use that pitch 85% of the time and get an awful lot of outs. His curveball was 66-71 mph with rolling action. There are times that his breaking ball can give a hitters trouble and other times when it just rolls. Hooker's best pitch is his 69 mph change-up. His arm slot is very good for the change and Hooker throws his with feel and gets good downward movement in the zone. It seems as though he could develop into a very quality sinker/slider pitcher. Hooker had an early early commitment to Arizona State and looks bound for school. However, a tweak here and there could get him untracked and put Hooker in position to sign in a decent round this spring.

He was at the CA Underclass Showcase, but did not pitch. Following is the report from a showcase in the fall of 2005... Hooker pitches from a high 3/4 slot with a quick arm action and an aggressive, high tempo delivery. His fastball (86-88) has been seen in other events touch in the low 90s and has plus sink on the arm side. Also impressive was that Hooker's fastball also was lively down in the zone on the opposite arm side. He features a slurve-type breaker (71-73) that has late action and can be used as an out pitch. As he continues to develop, that slurve will likely become more of a true slider because he is very aggressive with his pitches. That aggressive approach is probably why he did not show a change-up. All of Hooker's stuff is lively and another positive is that he is effectively wild, keeping hitters a little uncomfortable against him. Hooker has a good arm with plus projectability. He should remain a strong '07 prospect for D1 programs (though he has verballed to Arizona State already) and also for pro baseball.
