Shunk is an "04" SS/3B with tools. At 6'2/170 he has an athletic lean build that projects to get bigger and stronger. He runs well. But he's not a burner. He throws well, but it's not a cannon. He does have a real nice long loose arm action and looks real good, with nice carry, throwing across the infield. He has very good hands and body control, he can make all the plays. At the plate he is equally impressive. He's a gap line drive guy right now with a good looking approach and swing. Later on he should develop "wood bat" long ball power. Derek is a player and he has a very bright future. He's going to create a lot of scouting interest and he can play at any college in the country. He's an excellent student as well.

We see Shunk as a potential power corner guy in the future. He exhibited a nice power swing with wood, really getting the bat head out to the ball and pulling many pitches with authority. As usual with hitters who like to get their hands extended, Shunk can be jammed on the inside with good velocity fastballs, but with an aluminum bat he should be a real power factor. Defensively, Shunk could end up at any of the infield positions or in left field. He has nice hands and shows ability to hit line drives to all fields. At 6-2, 175, he has plenty of frame to build strength on in the future. We like the way he plays! Derek is an excellent student.
