Hugeley is a very physically strong 6-0, 190 lb catcher from Florida who we’ve seen frequently in the past. He is a good defensive catcher with pro level arm strength behind the plate at 81 mph. Hugeley’s release is still a bit long but he was under 2.00 on his pop times. Hugeley works hard defensively and isn’t afraid to put his body in front of balls. Offensively, Hugeley has big time power potential. He hits with low hands and takes an aggressive full swing at pitches, especially on the inside half of the plate. He had an excellent batting practice at the showcase and hit well in the games as well. Hugeley likely won’t be a high average hitter at the next level but he will drive pitcher’s mistakes hard and be a run producer with power. Hugeley also threw an inning and showed impressive arm strength, touching 88 mph with his fastball and throwing a 70-74 mph curveball with tight spin and sharp bite. Hugeley’s mechanics were on the raw side and he had trouble getting the ball down in the zone but he has potential from the mound as well.

Huguley is a very strong and physically mature junior catcher from Florida. He has very good arm strength and threw 78 mph in workouts with a low pop time of 1.90. He works hard behind the plate and is a good overall defensive catcher. Huguley looked different at the plate from when we’d seen him before. He hit from a crouched stance with lots of extra hand movement and was trying very hard to lift the ball. Huguley has solid bat speed when he’s controlled and short to the ball but he looked uncomfortable at the plate this time through. He has the overall potential to be a good hitter with the right approach. Huguley also threw a couple of innings, showing late running and sinking action on an 85-87 mph fastball, along with a sharp breaking 69 mph curveball. We’ve seen Huguley pitch before and this is consistent with past performances. He’s by no means polished on the mound, with a kind of quick, frenetic delivery, but he has 2 quality pitches and plenty of deception. Huguley should definitely keep his pitching options open in the future. He is also a top level student who will qualify at many of the better academic DI programs in the country.

Dustin Huguley is a 6'0", 210 lb., 2006 catcher from Lake Wales, Florida, with a present strong and solid body. He showed some of the best arm strength at the event, throwing 79 mph from behind the plate in workouts and getting his pop times down to 1.98. Huguley’s arm strength translated well to the mound, where he touched 86 mph with a short, quick arm stroke. Huguley is a good athlete for his size and ran 4.43 to first base on one ground ball. At the plate, Huguley generates good bat speed and will show his pop on occasion. He tends to hit open and pull off the ball, which affects his plate coverage and lengthens his swing. Huguley definitely has the potential to improve at the plate and his other tools are very good for a 2006 catcher. Huguley is an outstanding student off the field who should prove very attractive to some of the more academically oriented colleges. He could develop into a draft pick in the future.
