Derek Tan is a 2009 OF/3B with a 5'8'', 160 lb. frame from Kailua HI, who attends Mid Pacific Institute. Selected as a Top '09 Prospect at this event. Tan has a compact build and possesses good present day strength, particularly for a sophomore. He has some explosiveness in him that shows up at the plate. He showed really well with the bat in this event and looks to have a bat that will continue to develop in the coming years. He is short to the ball and has good bat speed. Tan sprays the ball to all fields and shows some extra base hit pop, while consistently staying inside the baseball. Should be a really solid contact hitter and tough out at the college level. Defensively Tan is a versatile player. Long term he could develop into a super-utility player, rotating between left, center, second base and maybe even third base. He is an outstanding student as well.
