Ian McCarthy is a 2009 RHP with a 6'0'', 165 lb. frame from Santa Ana, CA who attends Mater Dei. McCarthy has a medium sized frame with a thin lean build. McCarthy pitches from a 3/4 slot with a long arm action. His loose arm and his arm works. He has a live arm with good arm speed. McCarthy uses a high leg kick and gets his hips closed off at at balance point. He has smooth mechanics and repeats his delivery well. He throws across his body some and gets good extension out front. McCarthy pitches on somewhat of a down plane and he gets arm side run on his fastball. He throws an 11/5 curveball that has good tightness to it. It has some occasional downer action to it. McCarthy has projectable velocity and works down in the zone. At the plate, McCarthy starts with a wide stance and uses a short hand load to start his swing. He throws the bat head to the baseball and is a contact hitter. McCarthy is an outstanding student.

Ian McCarthy is a 2009 IF/RHP with a 6'0'', 160 lb. frame from Santa Ana, CA who attends Mater Dei HS. He has an average frame with a lean, somewhat laky body type and noticeable long arms. McCarthy was listed as a position player first but showed best on the mound where here has a very nice arm action. He projects quite well, even as a 6'0" right-hander. His arm action is long and loose, working from an over the top slot. The ball comes out of his hand easily, producing mid-80s fastballs with pretty low effort. His fastball also has some sink action. Expect him to make pretty steady velocity jumps over the next couple of seasons. McCarthy also has feel of both a curveball (68 mph) and a slider (76 mph), both having good spin and some bite. He also flashed a changeup that can be a really good pitch for him with his arm action. As a hitter McCarthy showed some bat speed and an aggressive nature. His barrel is long through the zone and resulted in hard opposite field line drive contact. As he gets stronger, all that McCarthy does will stand out more and more. He is a good pitching prospect but does have a chance to hit. Defensively he sets up well to the ball and has a good arm.
