2003 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Early is a unique pitcher in our experience. He might be least velocity of any pitcher who have every appeared at a Perfect Game showcase but he gets away with because of his pitching style and would probably be much less effective throwing in the mid 70’s than in the mid-60’s. That’s right, Early’s fastball topped out at 67 mph. In four innings of work, he allowed two scratch hits and induced 9 fly balls, which is a fair representation of what Early does on a regular basis. Essentially, everything Early throws has movement and he never throws a pitch over the plate. He tricks hitters with his fading fastball, enticing 56 mph change and roundhouse 60 mph curveball. Most importantly, Early has the skill and courage to pitch in this style and feel comfortable with it. Will it work at the next level? We don’t know, but we’d love to see if the hitters can prove that it can’t be done. He's a tricky lefty and a very good student.
