Jacob Slings is a 2008 LHP/1B/OF with a 6'4'', 215 lb. frame from Altoona, IA who attends Southeast Polk HS. He as an excellent athletic build with a lean, strong look. We've seen Slings frequently over the years and feel at this point he is a better first base prospect. He has good arm strength that he shows at first base but his arm action and pitching mechanics on the mound keep him from using it. He throws with a low elbow pushing action that gives him a 74-76 mph fastball and keeps him from having much spin on his slider. Slings competes hard, throws strikes and makes hitters swing the bat but it's hard to project his velocity at all with his pitching mechanics and arm action. Slings is a very smooth first baseman with good agility and soft hands around the bag and is an asset on defense. He has a good looking swing that is somewhat grooved but the ball jumps off his bat pretty well on contact and he does a nice job of staying short to the ball and making consistent contact. He has potential to keep improving as a left handed power hitter. Slings loves to play and is a good competitor. He is also a good student.

Jacob Slings is a 2008 LHP/1B with a 6'4'', 210 lb. frame from Altoona IA, who attends Southeast Polk HS. He has an excellent athletic body with very good present strength. Slings has a young face and it looks like he isn't anywhere close to physically mature, either. Slings has a low effort delivery to start with a high 3/4's release point. He tends to open his lower half very early and ends up pushing the ball to the plate while falling off to the third base side. His fastball was 67-71 mph and he threw a 57 mph curveball. He will need to make major mechanical adjustments to take the next step forward as a pitcher and we'd like to see how he throws from the field and compare that with what he is doing presently on the mound. Slings showed some potential with the bat as a young power hitter. He has a short, closed stride and maintains good balance and leverage in his swing. His strength gives him some bat speed and Slings showed nice pop on contact. He could really develop as a power hitter down the road. Slings is also a good student.

Jacob Slings is a 14 year old athlete from Altoona, Iowa who really intrigued us as both a hitter and pitcher. Despite his age and baby face, Slings is a solidly built 6'3", 205 lbs. and there’s no telling how big and strong he’s going to get as he matures. His father looks to be in the 6'10" range with very athletic features. As a left handed pitcher, Slings has excellent pitching mechanics. He gets very good balance over the rubber, paces his delivery well and his arm comes through very smoothly to a high ¾ release point. Slings has a very good downhill plane to the plate to his pitches and one can only imagine the impression he will create to hitters when he’s taller. One thing for sure is that no pitching coach, no matter how well meaning, should tinker much with Slings' basic delivery. What Slings can’t do yet because of his age is really accelerate his arm or his body to the plate. He doesn’t generate much torque from his hips and this combination leaves his fastball in the 69-71 mph area right now. But this is something that time, maturity and repetitions will address. Slings also threw an upper 50’s curveball that he occasionally got over well and a 62 mph change up. As a hitter he has an advanced approach, and uses a wide stance with quiet hands and a toe tap trigger. Slings has good bat speed and hand strength for his age. He tends to drift forward in his swing and gets off balance on off speed pitches. The hitting mechanics, size, and strength are there for Slings to be a top level hitter when he graduates. He is a very projectable two way player that will be fun to watch over the next 3-4 years. Jacob is a good student.
