Jamison Armstrong is a very toolsy 5'11" athlete from Texas who worked out both in the outfield and behind the plate in addition to pitching. Armstrong is wiry strong at 175 lbs, and has quick actions and good speed. Like his name says, though, his big tool is his arm strength. Armstrong threw 89 mph from the outfield in workouts with excellent on-line carry and was 78-79 mph from behind the plate. Armstrong’s pop times were only average because his release was slow and deliberate, but he also showed good hands and very nice blocking ability during the games. Catching is his obvious future, but if for some reason he has to play the outfield, he has the tools to be an above average defender there. At the plate, Armstrong shows raw bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat well. He hits out of a closed stance with a stiff left arm and tends to dive into the ball, but the potential is there for him to improve in the future. Armstrong’s arm strength didn’t fully translate to the mound, although he did show some promise there. He touched 84 mph with his fastball during an inning of relief work, and showed a sharp breaking 68 mph curveball. Jamison is a very good student.
