C Jason Smith: Smith is one of the best catching prospects in the Upper Midwest and he showed why at the Showcase. At 6-3, 185 lbs, he looks the part of the prospect and is very projectable physically. Despite his size and long levers, Smith’s actions both offensively and defensively are very short and quick. He has good arm strength and his release is compact and efficient. All his pop times were below 2.00 with a best of 1.86 during the drills. Smith impressed us with his blocking and receiving skills as well. He probably doesn’t catch many pitchers in South Dakota but he caught a couple of Division I signees at the Showcase with hard curveballs and showed lateral quickness and soft hands. Smith’s approach at the plate is similarly short and quick. He sets up in a relaxed, tall stance and has a no stride, no load approach and a level line drive swing. Smith has the bat speed and strength potential to hit with power in the future but it looks for now like he’s going to be a high average middle of the field hitter. This young prospect can hold his own with many of the more acclaimed Sun Belt catching prospects in the country. Smith’s signed to attend Northern Iowa.

Smith is an "04" catcher from South Dakota. At 6'3/175 he has a good projectable body. His father was a former Div I head coach and he's been taught the right way. In CR he popped a 1.9 with good 77 mph velocity. He looked very quick behind the plate and there's more than 77 mph velocity in his arm. We've watched him grow over the past few years and he just keeps getting better. At the plate he has a real nice swing short to the ball with quick hands. He does a nice job of keeping his hands inside the ball and shows good straight away power potential with wood. Jason is a very good student who's best years are still ahead of him. He's capable of producing at a very high level. College first, possible pro career later on.

Real good "04" catcher who can play other positions, maybe even pitch. Strong accurate throwing arm and good quickness behind the plate. Great baseball body that projects to get much bigger and stronger. Knows what he's doing. Good hitting mechanics. Really battled the top 90 mph pitchers in Ft Myers. Uses the whole field and projects to hit with power. Excellent high level baseball player with a very bright future. Keep a close eye on him.

Smith is a good looking player who probably projects to be a catcher. Good body, that will get bigger and stronger. He shows some arm strength and nice hands. Showed some big time hitting ability. Nice fluid swing out of a good solid approach. Shows some bat speed now, but he will end up with plus bat speed as he develops more strength. Good "04" to keep a close eye on!
