Joel Carranza is a 2007 rigth hand hitting catcher from McArthur HS, residing in Pembroke Pines, FL. Carranza has a strong, comact, somewhat stocky build on his 6'0" 187 lb. frame. He is a catcher that brings a good bat to the position, which will always help a catcher's rating. He was ranked #74 among PG National Top 100 position players and if he keeps on developing the bat, he will be a prospect to follow this spring. Carranza is an aggressive hitter. He starts open but closes up as he gets ready to attack at the plate. His swing arc is a bit sweeping but he gets good acceleration through contact, resulting in good present day power. Carranza is a timing type hitter whose swing can appear long if he is late. When on time his barrel is long in the zone and also results in the ability for him to drive the ball hard to the opposite field. Behind the plate he posted good pop times in the workout and showed a 2.09 in one game. His raw arm strength is approaching average but it plays above that with pretty good feet and a quick exchange. He is an adequate defender who will throw out some runners and drive in some runs. Carranza ran 4.62 home/1st with a 7.52 60. He is a D1 prospect and likely will have to continue to prove his bat at that level while also continuing to develop his defensive skills before getting a professional opportunity.

Joel Carranza is a 6' 187 pound 2007 catcher and third baseman from McArthur High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida who was named to the Top Prospect Team. He has a good athletic build and is very strong and mature. Joel has a big time arm behind the plate. He threw 79 mph down to second with a best pop time of 1.87 during the workout. He has a lightning quick release and his throws are very accurate. He takes charge of the game with his leadership skills. At the plate, Carranza has an open to closed hitting approach. He is a patient hitter who stays back well on off speed pitches. He is a pull hitter with a line drive swing plane and good bat speed. He has good bat speed and has good strength and power in his swing. One ball registerd 90 mph off his bat against an 87 mph fastball. Joel is a big time catching prospect who can really swing the bat.

Carranza is a 5-11 sophomore catcher from south Florida with a very projectable body and advanced catching skills on defense. He’s a good overall athlete who runs well for a catcher (7.23) and has body life and wiry strength. You won’t find too many catcher’s his age anywhere who can throw like Carranza. He hit 79 on the gun pretty effortlessly and was between 1.89 and 1.97 on his pops on every throw. Many catcher’s show effort or take short cuts in drills to get their pop times down, Carranza did it easily and repeated his mechanics every time. His athletic quickness will just add to his overall defensive package. Offensively, Carranza hits from a still, balanced stance with little or no load or weight shift. This keeps him short to the ball but limits his power potential. Carranza has the present strength, especially in his hands, to develop bat speed and can pull the ball hard with a rotational swing, but has plenty of room, and plenty of time, to improve his offensive approach. Good young prospect!
