Joey Castleman is a 2006 right handed pitcher/third baseman from Garland, TX with a thick strong body at 6-2, 200 lbs. He throws from a low 3/4's arm slot with an aggressive delivery and pitching style. Castleman attacks hitters with a fastball/slider combination and when he's throwing strikes he's very hard to hit. He does a good job hiding the ball behind a high leg kick and doesn't let the hitter see much of the ball or his arm until he's coming to the plateCastleman's fastball topped out at 89 mph in Atlanta with some tailing action and he has always done a good job maintaining his velocity. He has a sharp slider at 78 mph that he likes throwing at the hitters front shoulder. Castleman also mixed in a couple of 75 mph change ups that showed good sink. He knows how to mix his pitches and get hitters to swing and miss. We've often seen Castleman pitching out of the bullpen in WWBA events and his FB/SL combination can make him immediately effective at the college level in this role. Castleman is also a third baseman with a strong throwing arm and power potential. The ball jumps off his bat hard. Castleman is an excellent student off the field.

Joey Castleman is a 6'2", 190 lb. right handed pitcher from the 2006 class from Garland, Texas, with a mature and present strong body. He has a good, balanced delivery with good use of his strong lower half to generate power to the plate. Castleman will vary the release point on his fastball from mid to low ¾, but throws his slurve type breaking ball consistently from a mid ¾ arm slot. Castleman gets good running action on his 85-87 mph, and even touched 88 mph once. His slurve was 72-74 mph, and had good spin with a big sweeping break. He didn’t show a change up. Castleman’s velocity and movement on his fastball were consistent between his release points, and he’s probably better off staying up higher to create consistency with his breaking pitch. He has a strong arm, and good pitching skills for the next level.

At 6 foot 3 and 185 pounds Castleman has the beginnings of a Major League frame. As just a 2006 grad entering his sophomore year he projects off the charts. Although his body is already big, it appears to not be mature and it looks like there is a lot of growing still to do. If that is the case, his ceiling is one of the highest in his class. He presently showed some easy actions starting with his arm action that uses a low three quarter arm slot. His mechanics are a bit loose right now as he showed a varied release point but the ball comes out of his hand easy. His fastball showed velocity between 82-84 from the stretch and 84-87 mph from the full wind-up. It is a pitch with a lot of potential when you look at how easy he throws it and how hard he already can throw at his age. He also showed a slider clocked at 70-71 mph and it is another pitch that could end up being top notch. He is a big sophomore follow, we think he has a good career on the hill ahead of him.
