Josh Powers is a 2006 catcher from Elk Grove HS in Santee, CA, with a 6'3", 165 lb. frame. Powers runs well for a catcher running a 7.13 sixty on a very slow track. Behind the plate Powers has a strong (78C) and accurate arm with good footwork on his throws. He also has good receiving skills with soft hands and the ability to block balls in the dirt. Offensively, the right handed hitter hits from and upright and open stance with a high hand set. He has good bat speed with a slight loft swing path. Powers shows good strike zoned judgment, and gets his hands through the hitting zone well. He sometimes pulls off balls early trying to pull the ball. There is some present power in his swing with more to come as he continues to mature physically. Powers is a very good defensive catcher with solid hitting skills that will only get better. He is a player that needs to be followed. Powers is also an excellent student.
