Justin Upton is one of the top tools guys ever. He has high hips, an extremely MLB type 6'2/187 body. He's a shortstop just like his older brother BJ who was the 2nd pick of the 2001 draft and already in the Big Leagues. While Justin shows high SS grades his tools might be graded higher than anyone in history as a center fielder. Upton’s 6.23 speed in the 60 is unsurpassed in Perfect Game Showcase history and the ball comes off his bat with a different sound than other hitters this age. Upton looked smooth and polished at shortstop and didn’t play any centerfield, as has been talked about at times. He scores big in all departments. He even threw another wrinkle into his tools package, touching 94 mph in a quick inning on the mound. He exceeded all expectations as the #1 ranked player for 2005. Justin was selected to the AFLAC All American Team and received the Jackie Robinson award as the top player in High School. baseball.

We’ve been told that Upton has been on a strong weight lifting program this off-season and the results show. He’s noticeably bigger both in size and in his muscle tone. He checks in now around 6-2, 185. Most of that height is in Upton’s legs, as he’s one of the highest waists of any athlete we’ve been around. Upton’s increased strength resulted in the best loft power we’ve seen from the him. He crushed some balls to left centerfield both in BP and in games that will be jumping out of parks before long. The ball comes off his bat like a top MLB hitting star. Upton threw 89 mph across the infield with seemingly little effort and ran a 6.49 60. Justin is a true 5 tool prospect who we have ranked #1 in his class. His brother BJ was the 2nd pick of the 2002 draft and is currently one of the top prospects in baseball. Unfortunately 10 is the highest grade we give or Justin would grade out higher..

Describing Justin Upton is easy. He’s a true 5 tool player and the early favorite to be the first pick of the “05” draft. Nobody in high school baseball has better tools and that includes the “04” class. His brother BJ was the 2nd pick of the “02” draft. We actually liked Upton better as a centerfield prospect before we saw him in Lincoln. He has learned to throw more like a true shortstop since the last time we saw him and he looks real smooth. No matter where he plays, he has a plus arm for that position. The ball jumps off his bat and sounds much better than other top high school prospects. He is already a plus power potential with wood and should keep getting better. He’s one of the fastest runners in high school baseball and he’s got a MLB body already. Justin is a rare talent and one of the very few underclassmen in high school that you could predict major league stardom for. His mom and dad deserve a lot of credit for these Upton brothers. Beside the great talent they are outstanding young men who have worked very hard and they have no fear of competition. Justin scores a big grade including the make up department. Justin is a good student, but it's hard to think he'll end up playing anything other than professional baseball after high school.
