Bernstine is a senior outfielder from Iowa with good athletic quickness and strength. He has a solid lower half and looks bigger than his listed 175 lbs. Bernstine ran the 60 in 7.03 but plays faster on the baseball field. We’ve had him down to first in 4.3 from the right side many times and he shows very good range in centerfield, although he tends to drift to balls in the alley rather than getting to them and waiting. Bernstine also has very good arm strength at 84 mph and is a very good defensive outfielder. At the plate, Bernstine hits from an upright stance with high hands. He’s the type of hitter who is constantly changing his swing mechanics and doing different things, which makes it hard to develop any consistency. The ball jumps off his bat well because of his strength and raw bat speed and he’ll show you some gap to gap power on occasion. Bernstine has committed to attend Ellworth JC.

CF Kikie Bernstine: Bernstine is a very good athlete and he was one of the fastest players in the Spring League. We’ve got him down to first in 4.3-4.4 in the cold weather and he’s a Major League average runner when things get warmer, although he didn’t run the 60 well at the Spring Showcase. Bernstine is a top notch defensive outfielder who plays a shallow centerfield and ranges far to all sides. His arm strength is very solid and he gets good carry on his throws. How well Bernstine plays at the next level will depend on how his bat develops. He’s mechanically raw at the plate and despite having some upper body strength, does not develop the kind of bat speed you’d expect when you look at him. He is a junior and the type of player that the college coaches in the Midwest will have to account for next year.
