Cherney is a switch hitting catcher from Illinois. He is a Junior in High School with good potential for playing at a high level of college baseball. He has a good frame, built well for a catcher and shows the type of agility that is needed to succeed at a high level, behind the dish. He showed a good swing with the ability to get the barrel out front. He uses his hips well to get more power and bat speed. He worked real hard in the cages and we noticed that while he was doing his single arm swing drills he had a very level swing plane in both hands. It also worked well in his batting practice as he had a strong bottom hand, and kept his swing smooth and level. Kyle was also able to hit the ball where it was pitched very well. His weight shift was very small and it seemed to suit him fine because he was balanced and still kept his hands inside the inner half pitch. He will get stronger and generate even more bat-speed and he has a lot of potential for gap power with wood. As a defensive catcher Cherney showed quick feet behind the plate. His gear fit good and tight as he moved around, as if it were part of his body. He showed a relatively short-in-the-back arm motion and long in the front. It’s a good arm action for a catcher that can be described as quick and from the ear. He showed good overall arm strength with 76 mph velocity on his throws to second base and many were right on target. On the stopwatch we recorded pop times of 2 flat, more than once. We think he can get those throws under 2 with practice on his transfers and we project they will get faster anyway, as his body continues to mature and build strength. Cherney takes the game serious and had very good communication with the pitcher when receiving in the bullpen. He is a sharp defensive receiver who appears to have been well-schooled. He has the potential to develop into a high level college catcher. He has ability in every aspect of catching..
