Malachi Silva is a 2006 catcher from Poway High School in California, with a 5'11", 175 lb. frame. Behind the plate Silva does a good job of blocking balls with good foot speed and uses his chest well. However, that same foot quickness doesn't translate to his transfers on throws to second base. Silva shows good arm strength at 75 mph from behind the plate, but he could improve his pop time with better foot speed. With his present arm strength and improved release time, he would be tough to run on. Offensively he hits from a slightly closed stance with good bat speed that was better in the games than in batting practice. Silva tracks curveballs well and shows a good knowledge of the strike zone. Silva just needs to fine tune his release to second base and he will be a very good catch and throw player. He is also a good student.
