5/10/12: Mitchell Brown has pitched in an eye opening 19 different Perfect Game events since appearing at the Midwest Underclass Showcase in 2009. At those first events Brown was listed at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds and was throwing in the 78-80 mph range but already showing a good feel for his curveball and change up. Here are his notes from that first showcase. FB 78-80, CB 68, Chg 71. Full delivery, back turn, FB straight, good pace, bit cross body, OK change, slight slowing on Chg, big CB with 11/5 break, arm works pretty well, should keep improving, good feel for off speed, pitches well/mixes it up, tends to pitch up with FB, doubled up on change a few times, maintained FB velo very well. At the same event in 2010 Brown had added some serious strength and it showed in his overall stuff. Here are the notes from the 2010 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase. FB 86-89, CB 73, SL 80, Chg 78. leg raise delivery, long clean arm circle, arm comes thru easy, high 3/4's release, downhill plane, 6 to 8" cross body, needs to get more online, works + quickly, occ cutting action on FB, ball comes out easy, good plane but straight, SL was late with angle, some spin on FB, could get out front better on CB/some hump, OK change, FB best pitch, steady 88 mph. As happens often with prospects who stand out well above their peers in a state such as Minnesota, Brown has been heavily scrutinized by the scouting community over the past two years, probably more so than a similar prospect in California or Florida would have been. As one scout remarked this spring, “If Brown is going to start every Tuesday, why shouldn’t I be there every week? Who else is more important to see in this area?" Just as scouts thought they had Brown figured out last summer and fall as a potential fourth or fifth round pick with mature build, an 89-92 mph fastball, a hard breaking upper-70s curveball and a very competitive personality, he changed completely on them over the winter. In his first start of the spring in front of virtually all the Minnesota area scouts and a significant number of cross checkers, Brown threw six innings of near perfect baseball, topping out at 95 mph with plus command of his fastball, showing an 88 mph cutter that was a potential plus pitch, plus better command and feel for his curveball and changeup. His delivery was smoother and there appeared to be less effort in his release, giving all his pitches more consistency. Brown gave strong hints of what was to come at the Perfect Game Indoor Showcase in early February. Here are the notes from that event. Mature well proportioned build, good strength. On line hand drop delivery, fairly fast pace, quick easy arm, CB has hard tight spin, good life on Chg, very straight FB, will come inside with FB, H 3/4's, throws downhill, more effort on CB than FB, good change mechanics/arm speed, tends to bury CB, works quickly, everything down in zone. Needs to ID breaking balls, threw 76 downer and 84 SL during warmups, 79 slurve and 88 cutter in games. Like the 76/84/88 progression and not the 79. The two notable things that Brown has done over the last two months are found in the notes from that event. First, he’s made his delivery more directional, which has enabled him to use his strong lower half better and create more velocity and less effort in his delivery. Secondly, he learned a better feel and progression to his breaking balls. Instead of overthrowing a 79-80 mph slurve, he’s developed more feel and depth to a true curveball and more importantly has developed a fourth weapon in the 88 mph cutter, a pitch scouts cannot say enough positive things about. Interestingly, he’d already started showing that ability to cut the ball back in the late summer of 2010. The Minnesota Twins, who have a tradition of picking players from their home state, have a compensation pick at No. 42 and scouts have said they have a hard time imagining Brown getting past that slot. That begs the question of whether he’ll even get to the 42nd slot, however.

Mitchell Brown is a 2012 RHP with a 6-2 205 lb. frame from Rochester, MN who attends Rochester Century HS. Mature well proportioned build, very good present strength. On line hand drop delivery, fairly fast pace, high 3/4's arm slot, throws downhill well, works quickly. Fastball up to 93 mph, works FB down in zone consistently, mostly straight but angle and location a plus. Nice change up with arm speed and sinking life. Throws numerous breaking balls, shows more effort spinning ball, 76 mph curveball with downer shape, 79 mph slurve most common, 84 mph slider flashes bite, 88 mph cutter good pitch against LHH'ers. Has ability to create hard spin, just must identify and prioritize best options and usage. Keeps getting better. Good student. Signed with San Diego.
