Robert Lawler is a 2005 SS/P from Rochester, NY. At 6'0", 170, Lawler is a live bodied athletic infielder with good overall tools. He has a quick bat with a rotational swing approach and some loft in his swing, which he showed when he ripped a ball deep up the right centerfield gap. Lawler has developed more power over the last year and could become a very good offensive player. Defensively, Lawler projects to be a third baseman in the future, where his arm strength and quick hands will be an asset. His actions at shortstop are a bit deliberate to project him there at the pro level for now. Lawler also threw an inning at the showcase topping out at 80 mph. His running ability, arm and hitting skills make him a very good high level college prospect.

Lawler is a good all around athlete who we’ve seen before and always liked. It looked like Lawler’s timing and overall conditioning were in off-season form from what we saw in Fort Myers and that’s understandable coming from upstate New York in mid-January. Lawler’s best tool for us is his bat. He generates good bat speed from an open stance and the ball jumps off his bat in a hurry on contact. In batting practice he stayed behind and inside the ball well but changed his approach in games. We’ve seen Lawler run MLB average in the past and his athletic ability enables him to play any of a number of different positions. The key will be how Lawler’s arm strength develops as to whether he’ll be able to stay in the infield or move to the outfield. Lawler is a very good student. He's a junior that scouts and college coaches need to follow.

Robert Lawler -- Lawler is a 6-0 junior multi-position player from New York. He’s very athletic, which probably accounts for his playing multiple infield and outfield positions as well as pitching, but we like him best in centerfield right now. Lawler ran well on the spongy Fort Myers turf and was as low as 4.23 from the right side of the plate in games, so speed is not a concern. Lawler’s arm also plays much better from the outfield, where he threw 84 mph. At the plate, Lawler hits from a straight up no load stance. He’s hard on his front leg, which throws the plane of his swing off, but he generates good bat speed and the ball jumps on contact. Lawler is also a very good student. Excellent "05" to watch.

Robert is a solid infielder with some good tools. He shows infield actions and a good arm at 83 mph across the infield. He runs well and projects. He can make the plays and shows good extincts. He is a line drive type hitter with good bat speed. His swing is a bit long right now, but he can hit. Also pitches and could develop there as well. He is a young 05 and will be a very interesting follow over the next couple years.
