RHP Ryan Sheldon: Sheldon is an extra large 6-7, 215 senior right handed pitcher from Nebraska. His high school out in Central Nebraska doesn’t have a baseball program so he’s just getting into baseball shape. We know he’s in athletic shape because he ran a 7.04 60, which is exceptional for that size. One wonders if the Cornhusker football coaches know about this young man. Sheldon was impressive once he took the mound, too. He has an awkward take away in his arm stroke and is what scouts will call a "pie thrower". Despite this, Sheldon’s arm works well out front. His fastball was in the 80-83 mph range and was without doubt his third best pitch. Sheldon showed off his change up right away, striking out 2 hitters in the first inning with deceptive, hard sinking 69 mph pitches. After that, he broke out a 67-69 mph curveball that had a big, sharp break to it as well. Sheldon threw strikes with all three pitches and cruised unchallenged through three innings of work. He’s going to have to do something with his arm stroke in back to open his window for improvement but he does plenty of good things now, is a very good athlete and could really come on in the future.
